Joo Koon is often misunderstood as an industrial area with little to offer, but you’ll be proven wrong as soon as you step out of Exit A of Joo Koon MRT Station. Just a stone’s throw away from the train station is FairPrice Joo Koon, home to a mega supermarket with places to dine at, such as Ah Bowl Den, a casual eatery serving up local dishes.

Their toast sets caught our attention first. You’ll find them in a separate menu divided into two categories: Classic Sets and Mochi Sets. The former comprises your regular Kaya Butter ($6) toast that comes with two soft-boiled eggs and a hot kopi; you can also choose from four other flavours, such as Taro Butter ($6.40) and Crunchy Peanut Butter ($6).

You get the same variations under the Mochi Sets, just that each toast includes a stretchy layer of mochi for textural variety. The mochi toast costs $0.30 more than a classic toast—for example, Taro Mochi is priced at $6.70 and Kaya Mochi at $6.30.

While the toasts are great for a quick breakfast run or a midday pick-me-up, the Braised Pork Rice (from $7.80) is a better choice for a hearty lunch or dinner. You can pay an additional $2.50 to make it a set, which comes with one of these three options: braised tau kee, mini ngoh hiang, or any iced drink.

Here’s a tip for spice lovers: change your rice to Koka noodles, which come with a mildly spicy and punchy flavour, by paying an additional $1. This applies to any of the rice bowls, including the Hakka Fermented Crispy Pork Rice (from $7.80) that’s topped with a hard-boiled egg and some veggies.

If you can’t decide what to get, we recommend Heh Heh Laksa (from $6.80), which comes with a rich, coconutty broth, thick rice vermicelli noodles, tofu puffs, fresh prawns, and a hard-boiled egg. Do note that all rice and noodle dishes are available from 11am, except for the Braised Pork Rice and Heh Heh Laksa, which are available all day long.
