When we first reviewed Old Shifu Charcoal Porridge, we were impressed with their smooth and creamy Cantonese-style congee. The newer eatery is helmed by an ex-chef from Ah Chiangâs Porridge, the OG charcoal-cooked porridge stall thatâs just a short walk away.

Ah Chiangâs Porridge was first founded in 1971 on Tiong Poh Road in Tiong Bahru, by Ah Chiangâs uncle. In 1995, the namesake stall was then taken over by Ah Chiang.

A bestseller is the Pork Porridge ($4.50), which comes with sliced meat and minced pork. Those who love innards can opt for the Mixed Pork Porridge ($4.50) instead, as it includes pork intestines. The pork used at the stall is delivered fresh each day from Tiong Bahru Market.
Other popular dishes include the Fish Porridge ($4.50), which uses fresh fish from Pasir Panjang Fishery Port. Thereâs also a Century Egg Cuttlefish Porridge ($6)Â if youâre a fan of strong flavours.

The Cantonese-style congee is said to be smooth and on the lighter end, making it a hit with older folks residing in the area. Do note that there might be some waiting time needed especially during peak hours, as the porridge is cooked on charcoal instead of commercial stoves.
High-quality rice is used and no extra condiments are added to the porridge.

Those who live in the West can also check out Ah Chiangâs second outlet at JEM, right next to Jurong East MRT Station.
