1. Mike’s Caribbean Food

Mike’s Caribbean Food brings Jamaican grub to Singapore and at pocket-friendly prices, too! Located at famed supper joint Simpang Bedok, the hawker stall  offers hearty mains like Jerk Chicken ($10). Marinated in traditional Jamaican herbs and spices like scotch bonnet pepper, the staple Caribbean dish is served with rice and peas, and packs a punch full of flavour.

2. Plum and Rice

For as little as $4, you can get a full meal consisting of umeboshi (Japanese pickled plums) rice, a side dish, a choice of protein, and free-flow soup at Plum and Rice. Opened by three young hawkerpreuners, their dishes are homey and will be appreciated by both young and old. The menu rotates frequently, but we recommend getting their top-selling mainstay: Braised Pork Belly Set ($4). The delectable pork, together with its tasty sauce, makes for the perfect companion to the tart pickled plum rice.

3. Urban Smokeshack

You can now get smoked meats and sausage raclette in a hawker centre thanks to Urban Smokeshack. House-smoked with hickory or applewood, the cuts of meat proffered here are juicy and comparable to those found in restaurants. A unique item on their menu is the Chicken Thigh with Buah Keluak Sauce ($6), where the robustness of the rich Peranakan sauce marries beautifully with the subtle smokiness of the tender chicken.

One of the cheapest nasi ambeng in Singapore, Enak’s prices start from $6.50 for an individual portion. Here, fluffy basmati rice is surrounded by a slew of rempah-based delights including bergedil, sambal brinjal, sambal goreng, sambal tahu tempe goreng, achar, grated coconut, and your choice of chicken or beef.

5. The Pasta Boutique

Pastas served in kopitiams have always been more of a miss than hit for me. That is, until I stumbled upon The Pasta Boutique. Cooked to al dente perfection, the house-made pastas are firm to the bite and carry the sauces well. Bestsellers include their Chilli Crab Linguine ($10.50) featuring shredded crab meat and a picante chilli crab sauce that’s topped with lime leaves for a tangy kick. Bursting with earthy aroma is their cream-based Truffle Mushroom Pasta ($11.80) that is slated to be a hit amongst truffle lovers.

6. Hometown Western

Hometown Western is, hands down, one of the best Western food I’ve ever had at a coffee shop. Seriously, it’s so good, I have friends who would take the bus all the way here just for their sumptuous Chicken Chop ($5.50). The winner, however, is their scrummy Black Pepper Lamb Chop ($7) that has the right balance of fatty bits and meat. Plus, they don’t skim on their portions, and you can always expect a massive slab of chicken or three pieces of lamb cutlets with either order.

Address: 123 Bedok North Street 2, Jin Piao Coffeeshop, Singapore 460123
Opening hours: Fri-Wed 11am to 10:30pm

7. 85 Bak Chor Mee

No Bedok hawker stall list will be complete without 85 Bak Chor Mee. Located at Fengshan Centre, there are two stalls – Xing Ji Rou Cuo Mian and Seng Hiang Bak Chor Mee – selling the popular pork soup-based noodles. The latter also offers dry bak chor mee ($3.50) that’s tossed in a piquant house-made chilli paste made with sambal and pork lard.

Find out which is the better stall in our 85 Bak Chor Mee comparison.

8. Inspirasi

I’m not a fan of mee soto, but I can never resist a bowl of Inspirasi’s Soto Ayam ($2.50) whenever I’m in the vicinity. Join the snaking queue and get yourself a comforting bowl to understand what’s all the hype about. Pro tip: ease up on the chilli if you can’t handle the heat, as it will make you sweat buckets!

Address: 208B New Upper Changi Road, #01-64, Bedok Interchange Food Centre, Singapore 462208
Opening hours: Daily 11am to 11pm

9. FengShan Satay Bee Hoon

Their addictive, nutty sauce is the reason why there’s always a long line at FengShan Satay Bee Hoon ($3). Rich and creamy, the savoury-sweet gravy boasts chunky bits of nuts and is thicker than their counterparts. They are also liberal with their ingredients of pork, tau pok and kang kong, ensuring you get more than just bee hoon and gravy in every bite.

Address: 85 Bedok North Street 4, #01-41, Fengshan Centre, Singapore 460085
Opening hours: Daily 5pm to 12am

10. Hill Street Char Kway Teow

I can never say no to Hill Street Char Kway Teow ($4). The kway teow, which is tossed together with a copious serving of lap cheong, cockles, sinful pork lard and sweet black soy sauce, exudes an alluring charred wok hei that will have you salivating. The only downside is that the wait can be quite tiresome for such a small serving.

Address: 16 Bedok South Road, #01-41, Singapore 460016
Opening hours: Tue-Sun 12pm to 6pm

Explore Bedok through your stomach

This gentrified neighbourhood has certainly earned its title as a food paradise in my books. It’s such a pity I’ve had to move out of my parents’ house in Bedok and away to the North-East just when it’s beginning to turn cool! Guess this gives me all the more reason to visit my parents every week.
