As someone who has stayed in Bishan my entire life, it’s easy to just turn to Junction 8 for a quick meal fix. However, the food scene in Bishan is way more vibrant than it seems. So if you and your friends are ever in the area, or if your family needs a new go-to in the neighbourhood, here are 10 spots with delicious food that are sure to satisfy.


1. Ding Ji Mushroom Minced Meat Noodles

For a comforting meal, head down to Ding Ji Mushroom Minced Meat Noodles for a bowl of Fish Maw Soup ($8). The base of the soup is a flavourful pork bone broth that comes with generous servings of sliced pork, liver, fish maw and minced meat. A bowl of well-seasoned springy noodles is served on the side. Whether it’s a rainy evening or a sweltering afternoon, this meal is comfort in a bowl.

For Western food minus the premium prices, pay a visit to 吃Western.  This humble kopitiam stall is helmed by three experienced chefs with more than two decades of restaurant and hotel experience between them. Together, they came up with their versions of comforting and affordable dishes such as Steak Frites ($14) and Chicken Chop ($6). Generously portioned and well prepared, these dishes can satisfy any appetite.

If you are looking for a healthy food spot, The Wholefood Kitchen is a humble hawker stall that offers delicious meals made with fresh and unprocessed ingredients. Aside from hearty rice bowls and wraps, they also put unique spins on familiar dishes. Their dry Thunder Tea Noodles ($12), for example, is a vegan take on Hakka thunder tea noodles. Speaking of zi char, Two Chefs Eating Place is a great food spot for casual family gatherings. They offer crowd-favourites such as Salted Egg Yolk Chicken ($10) and Sambal Lala ($10) that you can’t go wrong with. If you want to try something different, order a plate of their Butter Pork Ribs ($8) to share. This dish is milky, slightly sweet and savoury – a unique upgrade from the regular sweet and sour pork. If you’re like my family and are all about convenience, you can also call in and place an order for takeaway, and pick the food up on the way home.

They offer all-day breakfast items such as Southern Grits and Eggs ($6.90) and their sweet Apple Jack Au Pain Perdu ($5.90). 10. Ming Kee Chicken Rice

If you’re running out of money but still want a decent meal, you can’t go wrong with an affordable plate of Steamed Chicken Rice ($3.50) from Ming Kee Chicken Rice. Unlike your conventional chicken rice stall, they serve their smooth chicken meat cold. This makes the meat more flavourful and tender. The only problem with this place is how crowded it can get during lunch hour, so visit them slightly later to avoid the long queue.
