Bloomsbury Bakers: Elegant pastries, local tastes (Menu Review)

The little bakery that could

I want to like Bloomsbury Bakers, I really do! It was apparent when I walked into the cafe that it was full of heart. The quaint and cosy interiors look like something out of Home and Decor magazine, it was inviting and I felt like I would be taken care of here. Unfortunately, I cannot say the same for the cakes.

We were invited down to try some new creations from the Le Cordon Bleu duo. The new cakes are inspired by local desserts in cake form and are available for a limited time. Here’s our run down:

Chendol Cheesecake ($6.50)

I really enjoyed the texture of the cake, the cheese was light, and the strands of chendol are scattered throughout the cake which is a nice touch. The flavors however were just too muted. There was little in the way of flavour and I found it ultimately forgettable.

Orh Nee Cake ($6)

Yam lovers might just like this one. The cake is gloriously light, which may turn off lovers of thick orh nee. The cake is also baked with coconut cream and flakes. Again, the  flavours were muted. None of the flavors were really prominent, and the distinctive taste of yam and lard of traditional orh nee was missing.

Pulut Hitam Tart ($6)

If I had to pick a winner, this would be it. The panna cotta was smooth and sweet, and the pulut hitam that topped it added a nice contrast in texture and another element of sweetness. I would have preferred a sweeter pulut hitam, but I’m starting to sound like I have an insatiable sweet tooth.
