Chai Chee Cai Tou Guo: $2 Old School Fried Carrot Cake Sticks In Bedok North

$2 carrot cake sticks at Chai Chee Cai Tou Guo

Most of us usually fall in one of two teams: Team Black Carrot Cake, or Team White Carrot Cake. Sadly, this equation forgets to include old school fried carrot cake—you’ll typically see these as deep-fried triangles, without the lup cheong and hei bee you get in the dim sum varieties. Chai Chee Cai Tou Guo is one place you can hit up, if you’re looking for these old school bites.

On the menu at Chai Chee Cai Tou Guo are four items: Yam Cake ($0.60), Yam Cubes ($2), Carrot Cake ($0.60), and Carrot Cake Strips ($2/$3). While the Yam Cake and Carrot Cake are sold by piece, the Yam Cubes come in bags of five, while the Carrot Cake Strips come in paper bags of 10 or 15 sticks, looking somewhat like French fries.

These nostalgic bites are fried in small batches, so they’re rarely left to sit on the display for long. The carrot cake here is said to be crisp on the outside, and soft within. If you’re going for the Yam Cake or Yam Cubes, these have bits of taro, and dried prawns, that give them a savoury, umami flavour.

Chai Chee Cai Tou Guo has supposedly been around for more than 60 years! These Fried Carrot Cake Strips are not often seen these days, so if you haven’t tried them, you should definitely make a trip to Bedok North to get your hands on these old school snack.

We recently visited Bedok Interchange Hawker Centre, where we tried an orange coloured chicken rice at Jefri The Original Botak Chicken Rice! Otherwise, if you’re looking for regular carrot cake, here are 10 fried carrot cake stalls in Singapore that you should visit.
