ICYMI, there’s a new kid on the Clarke Quay block: Coffeehouse by Kobashi, a new brunch cafe serving up hearty mains and loaded sourdough doughnuts!
If the name sounds familiar, that’s because it’s run by the same team behind Kobashi Bakery, which started as a home-based business that grew an online following after launching in 2020.
Fans will be happy to know that the bakery’s signature sourdough doughnuts are available here in limited quantities, alongside a small selection of brunch mains and all-day toasties.
The Chilled Truffle Capellini ($28++)Â is perfect on a hot afternoon. This elegantly plated dish comprises cold angel hair pasta tossed in piquant truffle oil, generously topped with ikura and tobiko.
Crowning the dish are six perfectly seared scallops that come with a charred edge for an interesting layer of smokiness.
If you prefer something more decadent, we recommend the Chonky Chix ($23++): deep-fried buttermilk chicken thigh and purple cabbage slaw sandwiched by two house-made potato buns.
The crispy fried chicken chunk pairs excellent with the refreshing slaw, while the cheese-crusted potato bun adds a nice saltiness to each bite.
The star of the show here is their sourdough doughnuts, of course. These treats are freshly prepared and baked on-site, and come in an array of unique flavours.
Mainstays include the ever-popular Nutty Rocher ($5.50++)—a riff on the iconic Ferrero Rocher chocolate—and Brown Butter Maple Cream ($5.80++), topped with a cute mini pancake.
There are seasonal specials too, including the Ube White Chocolate Coconut ($5.50++), where Kobashi’s signature sourdough doughnut is filled with a creamy yam cream, then coated in white chocolate and toasted coconut flakes.
For drinks, besides the regular coffee options, the cafe also offers aesthetically pleasing options such as Honey Coffee Milk Foam ($7++) and Matcha Strawberry ($8.50++): a deliciously creamy matcha latte spiked with sweet and tangy strawberry puree.
Coffeehouse by Kobashi is a six-minute walk from Clarke Quay MRT Station. If you’re taking the Blue Line, you can alight at Chinatown MRT Station and walk for around nine minutes.
The cafe, which seats around 20, tends to get packed during the lunch hour. There was already a line forming outside at 11:30am when we visited on a weekday, so we advise visiting earlier when it’s less crowded.
Another must-visit cafe in the area is Swee Lee Clarke Quay, where you’ll find delicious waffles, toasties and more in a music shop. Otherwise, read our full guide to the best cafes in Singapore, sorted by neighbourhood.
