Famous Korean fried chicken chain, Doran Chicken, is finally here! They just opened their very first flagship restaurant in Singapore, located at Orchard Gateway, a short walk from Somerset MRT Station. Doran Chicken, which has been around for nearly a decade, originates from Daegu, known to be the heart of Korea’s fried chicken scene.
Their name comes from the Korean phrase ‘doran doran’, which means to gather around and have a friendly conversation, aligning with the easy-going vibe of the restaurant. Here, you can expect various types of fried chicken, unique flat dumplings, and other authentic Korean dishes.
What’s distinctive about Daegu-style fried chicken is that they first age the chicken with seasonings and herbs in a traditional Korean earthen pot or onggi, to enhance its flavour.Â
Additionally, they brush each fried chicken piece with the sauce to ensure everything is evenly coated. These two extra steps help to ensure that the fried chicken comes out perfectly every time. The batter is also said to be lighter and not as oily compared to similar offerings you would get at other fried chicken restaurants!Â
There are four different types of seasoning you can choose from for your fried chicken: Original Fried, 1978 Soy Sauce, Dalcom Spicy, and Sweet Volcano. Else, get the Boneless Half & Half ($20.80++) for more variety.Â
The chicken is said to boast tender, juicy meat, and a crispy, well-marinated exterior. The Sweet Volcano is a good pick if you like a good balance between sweet and savoury flavours, as well as a little kick of spice.Â
Although their specialty is fried chicken, you have to try their unique Flat Dumplings with Sweet and Spicy Squid Salad ($17.80++) too. These dumplings are a popular street food native to Daegu, and are generally quite hard to find in Singapore! They are filled with glass noodles and vegetables, pairing amazingly with the mixed squid and cabbage salad.
Other popular dishes on the menu include Sincheon Tteokbokki ($12.80++) and Tuna Rice Balls ($9.80++).Â
End your meal off with their extensive variety of refreshing mocktails such as the Jeju Blossom (price TBD), Blue Haeundae (price TBD), and Seoul Night (price TBD).Â
