Ex-Jumbo Chef Opens $5 Curry Rice Stall At Golden Mile, Can Use CDC Vouchers Too

Dragon Curry has $5 curry rice at Golden Mile Food Centre

If I had to pick one of my favourite local dishes, it would be curry rice. There’s so much to love in this simple plate: fluffy white rice drenched in creamy curry, paired with tender braised cabbage and your choice of savoury proteins. Beach Road Scissors Cut Curry Rice has been my go-to, but I think Dragon Curry at Golden Mile Food Centre is a strong contender. The newly opened stall is run by a young ex-Jumbo chef who boldly ventured off the beaten path to embrace the demanding—but undeniably admirable—hawker lifestyle.

Food at Dragon Curry

There are six items on the menu, and I got two to try: the classic Chicken Cutlet Curry Rice ($5) and the bestselling Red Beancurd Pork Belly Cutlet Curry Rice ($5.90).

You can add more ingredients to beef up your meal, including a bowl of curry ($0.50), sambal prawn ($1), braised pork belly ($3), and even fried squid ($6).

The first thing that caught my eye was the portion size—for just $5, it was impressively hearty and generous. Another interesting detail that stood out was the lava egg, a refreshing twist to the usual fried egg you see at most curry rice stalls.

My Chicken Cutlet Curry Rice came with plain white rice covered in a generous scoop of curry, alongside braised cabbage, a lava egg, and crispy chicken cutlet cut into bite-sized pieces.

Here’s a tip for spice seekers and bold palates: try a scoop of the house-made chilli sauce to dip your meat in. It’s spicy and punchy with a tangy undertone.

I enjoyed how coconutty the curry was, accented with hints of garlic, ginger, lemongrass, and kaffir lime leaves. The blend of coconut milk and evaporated milk made the sauce richer and more full-bodied.

The chicken cutlet was one of the crispiest ones I’ve had, maintaining a lovely crunch despite being drenched in curry. In short, what made the chicken cutlet here a winner was its crackling, crispy skin, and not so much the thickness or juiciness of the meat.

While the Chicken Cutlet Curry Rice was great, the Red Beancurd Pork Belly Cutlet Curry Rice was exceptionally delicious.

The fermented red beancurd paste gave the tender pork a balanced mix of salty and savoury flavours, reminding me a little of har cheong gai.

What’s interesting at Dragon Curry is that you can swap the lava egg for a fried omelette.

I was surprised by how thick and dense the omelette was, holding together like a slice of carrot cake—crispy on the outside, while soft and springy on the inside. For me, the lava egg was a better choice with the curry rice, but if you’re really hungry, the fried omelette might be a more substantial option.

Ambience at Dragon Curry

The stall is located in the basement of Golden Mile Food Centre—you’re at the right place if you spot pink tables and chairs! There was a queue when we arrived around 11:15am on a weekday, but it didn’t take long before it was my turn to order. It’s a quick six-minute walk from Nicoll Highway MRT Station, or a 10-minute walk from Lavender MRT Station.
