MasterChef S2 Winner Launches Laksa Risotto, Kaya Latte And More At Dhoby Ghaut Cafe

ICYMI: Filled In The Blank, a cafe in Dhoby Ghaut, has just got a proper menu upgrade, courtesy of MasterChef Singapore Season Two winner Derek Cheong.

The new additions lean further from straightforward kopitiam fare into more inventive territory, and one dish in particular has already emerged as the clear favourite.

That would be the Laksa Risotto ($24++). It sounds like an odd pairing on paper, with Italian technique meeting Singapore’s favourite spicy noodle soup, but it comes together as a rich, fragrant bowl. According to online reviews, the heat builds steadily rather than hitting all at once, so even those who usually steer clear of anything too fiery might find it worth pushing through the burn.

The Hong Kong French Toast ($16++) is the other standout. Here, thick-cut bread comes out warm, buttery, and pillowy-soft, then gets paired with a scoop of cold ice cream, creating a satisfying hot-cold contrast.

For something savoury and satisfying, get the Beef Short Rib Galbi ($32++), a Korean-inspired number featuring beef that’s braised until fall-apart tender and coated in a sticky, savoury galbi glaze. Otherwise, consider the XO Carrot Cake ($12++), pairing crisp-edged carrot cake with egg and a spicy, umami-laden XO kick.

For dessert, the Panna Cotta ($9++) keeps things simple: a creamy, milky custard cut through with a tart berry sauce that stops it from tipping into jelak territory.

If you’re here for breakfast instead, expect the usual comfort of Kaya Toast with Butter (from $3.30++) and on the drinks side, the Hor Ka Sai (from $3++) is worth flagging—a Malaysian-style blend of chocolate malt and Nanyang kopi that comes out thick and velvety.
