This AMK Cafe Lets You Pick Your Own Toaster And Jams For A DIY Bread Tasting

The Toast Story at Fred Bread has DIY toast experience in AMK

If you’ve ever wished that breakfast could feel as atas as a wine tasting, The Toast Story at Fred Bread has your back. You don’t just get typical kaya toast here; you curate your own toast menu, with the owner, Fred, playing the role of ‘toast sommelier’ and personally guiding you through the whole experience!

Every component of the experience is tailored to your whims and preferences. With a sparkle in his eye, Fred explains the entire concept to you, pairing your drinks with spreads and even toasting the bread right in front of you.

The DIY toast sets are all constructed according to your tastes, with recommendations from Fred himself. First, choose between two types of bread: Hokkaido Milk ($3) or Black Sesame ($3.60). We found the sesame to be nutty and earthy, while the milk bread allowed the spreads and cheese to stand out more.

Next, choose from a list of nine drip coffees or five blooming tea options. The coffee here is sourced from Coffeeland in Taiwan, and has an extensive array of flavour profiles ranging from fruity to chocolatey.

We tried the Fruits Melody ($8), which had strong aromatic notes of tangy citrus, alongside a nutty, earthy, and prune-like body. The drip coffee is poured right in front of you, allowing you to catch a whiff of the coffee as it steeps and blooms, and observe how the fragrant notes evolve.

If you’re coffee-averse, go for a pot of blooming tea, such as Antoinette’s Affair ($8), a sweet lychee tea, and Paris Rendezvous ($8), with fragrant notes of rose.

Like a sommelier, Fred explains each coffee and tea’s aroma and tasting notes, and even recommends pairing each specific drink with his selection of jams and spreads.

The spreads here are definitely out of the ordinary—the jams are from the multiple award-winning Bernadette de Lavernette ($2.50 each), used by various three-Michelin-starred chefs such as Joel Robuchon, Georges Blanc and more. They follow the secret French royal family recipe, and are completely natural with no additives or preservatives.

You can also choose Braun Kranfil’s spreads, imported straight from Germany, such as Kranfil’s Chocolate ($2.50) with a rich, intense cocoa flavour, and Kranfil’s Mocca ($2.50) with roasted notes of coffee. We tried the Kranfil’s Passion Mango ($2.50), which was extremely sweet with delightful, crunchy bits of crepe flakes in it.

You can also opt to toast your bread with cheese, which includes French Mozzarella ($3.50) and Hokkaido Cheddar Cheese ($3.50).

The cafe is also slowly introducing more menu items to enhance the experience. We tried their Mushroom Soup ($9.90), which had a rich, earthy, and savoury depth while accompanied by perfectly crisp slices of milk bread.

As we mentioned earlier, you can select which toaster you would like to have your bread prepared in from the lineup displayed on the shelves. We had ours done in this picturesque, limited-edition Dolce & Gabbana Smeg toaster!

After he was laid off from the tech industry in 2023, Fred took the bold plunge to start a bakery from scratch, purchasing professional equipment and renting a commercial kitchen. That has since evolved into the cafe space it is today, where Fred hopes to bring the ultimate toast experience to his guests.

Tucked away near an industrial park in Ang Mo Kio, this small cafe sits along a row of eateries beneath a residential development. It is a 15-minute bus ride from Lentor MRT Station. Reservations are accepted, and even recommended, for groups of two or more.
