We Found A Hidden Mexican Restaurant In Farrer Park That Accepts CDC—Does It Rival Huevos?

Fuego Mesa serves Mexican cuisine under a HDB block in Farrer Park

It’s hard not to love Mexican cuisine. From hearty tacos to loaded bowls of chips with guacamole, every dish is full of bold and punchy flavours. If I ever run away from home one day, you’ll probably find me at Huevos in Bugis—my favourite restaurant in Singapore. 

But in recent years, one spot that’s often mooted to give them a run for their money is Fuego Mesa—a hole-in-the-wall eatery located beneath an HDB block in Farrer Park. With all the buzz it’s been generating on social media, I knew it was time to take off my Huevos-tinted glasses and see if it lives up to the hype.

Food at Fuego Mesa

With such an extensive menu featuring all the familiar Mexican favourites, I had a hard time deciding what to order. On top of that, you can use your CDC Vouchers to offset the meal, which makes the indulgence feel a little more justified.

You should have seen the expressions on our faces when we were served their Beer-Battered Fish Tacos ($15++). Two massive chunks of fried fish wrapped in purple-coloured taco skin greeted us, topped with purple cabbage, mango salsa, and finished off with chipotle mayonnaise. The fish slices were so hefty that the taco skins, which we learned got their colour from a mixture of blue and purple corn they used, were struggling to contain the fish.

And they were not just all size and no substance. Sporting a golden-brown exterior with a subtle sheen, cutting into the fish revealed its delicate white flesh. The skin was shatteringly crisp, in contrast to the tender meat that instantly disintegrated in my mouth. That said, the zingy cabbage and smoky chipotle mayo added depth, binding all the flavours together well. With its freshness and generous portion size, this dish edges out the famous Baja Fish Tacos over at Huevos.

The Beef Carnitas Rice Bowl ($18.90++) was visually appealing with a multitude of colours, and I also appreciated how they separated the elements so you can portion to your liking. Unfortunately, it did not taste as good as it looked. 

The rice was quite clumpy, making it less pleasant to bite into. The same was the case for the beef carnitas, which were bunched up together and tasted slightly dry, although the different sauces offered some redemption. At such a price point, this was unfortunately a miss. 

We moved on to the Chipotle Chicken Quesadillas ($17.90++), which arrived in three crunchy slices packed with a hearty amount of chicken. The blend of mozzarella and cheddar was rich and high-quality, but its overpowering nature muted the other flavours. We would have loved for the smoky notes of the chipotle chicken to come through more distinctly.

We certainly didn’t expect the Chicken Wings ($12++) to impress us this much, but they did. The almost palm-sized wings were a pleasant surprise, bursting with juices that oozed out the moment we tore them apart. The meat was well-marinated, encased in a crispy skin that we wished were slightly thicker for a more satisfying bite. 

But it was the hot sauce that stole the show. We learned that it comprises ingredients such as habanero, onion, and garlic, which brought an addictive spicy kick that elevated the chicken further. At $3++ per wing, this was a steal. 

Ambience at Fuego Mesa

The vibes at Fuego Mesa are immaculate, as stepping inside feels like wandering into a cosy Mexican enclave tucked away in the heartlands. Its interior is dressed in vibrant hues, with colourful murals, vinyl records, and playful Mexican motifs splashed across the walls. The cosy layout makes the space feel inviting, while the friendly staff adds to its warm atmosphere.

Fuego Mesa—Eatbook review

As one of the more popular Mexican spots online, Fuego Mesa draws inevitable comparisons with the fan-favourite Huevos. Unfortunately, in terms of consistency across dishes and value-for-money, it doesn’t quite measure up. However, that’s no shame for an eatery less than a year old, and with several standout dishes, they have proven themselves a solid option. The fact that they invite this comparison in the first place already speaks volumes about their quality, and we’d certainly recommend Mexican food lovers give their offerings a try.
