Hock Heng: Popular Fish Soup “Bak Chor Mee” In Aljunied, Opens From 3AM

Hock Heng is a long-queue fish soup stall in Aljunied

Rain or shine, there’s nothing quite like a comforting bowl of fish soup, where you get tender fish slices submerged in a robust, full-bodied soup. Recently, we came across Hock Heng in Aljunied, a popular fish soup stall that’s been around since the 1990s. They open at 3am on most days, so you can visit for an early brekkie or late-night supper fix.

What’s interesting about Hock Heng’s fish soup is that their signature dish is similar to bak chor mee, where you get dry mee pok or mee kia topped with all sorts of ingredients. In this case, the meat is swapped out for a variety of seafood.

Their menu sees four items: Fishball Noodles ($3), Seafood Noodles (from $5), Sliced Fish Soup (from $5), and Seafood Soup (from $5). You can get it dry or soup for the fishball and seafood noodles.

The top two picks among regulars are the Seafood Noodles and Sliced Fish Soup; the former includes flaky and tender fish slices, fresh prawns, and bouncy fishballs atop thin, springy noodles.

Their fish soup, on the other hand, comes with the same set of ingredients, but with tomato chunks in a clear soup. Unlike most fish soup stalls, you don’t have the option to add milk to your broth here.

According to what’s displayed at the counter, there are four types of fish: cod, threadfin, pomfret, and red grouper. We don’t know if these alternate depending on what’s available for the day, but online reviews tout the quality of the fish as really fresh.

Take note that a snaking long queue usually forms in the morning, especially before the lunch crowd thickens at Sims Vista Market & Food Centre. We encourage you to head down as early as you can to avoid a wasted trip! For easy access, Hock Heng is a six-minute walk from Aljunied MRT Station.
