I Am Geprek Bensu: Popular Indonesian Geprek Joint Now At Lucky Plaza

I Am Geprek Bensu has famous ayam geprek in Orchard

Update: I Am Geprek Bensu is permanently closed.

Singapore could be considered Southeast Asia’s food capital, or one of them at the very least, where you’ll find all sorts of international cuisines and brands on our little red dot of an island. If you’re a fan of ayam geprek, or Indonesian smashed chicken, here’s some good news: I Am Geprek Bensu, a famous ayam geprek joint from Indonesia, has recently opened at Lucky Plaza!

I Am Geprek Bensu was first established in 2017, and became so popular that there are now 118 branches in Indonesia and Malaysia. Besides their affordable set meals, they’re also known for their sambal chilli that’s specially made in Indonesia with locally sourced chillies. This sambal comes in a single level of spiciness in Singapore, but runs from level one to 10 in Indonesia and Malaysia. What you’ll get here is said to be a level four, but don’t worry, there are plans for them to introduce the other levels here eventually.

Start with their signature dish, the Chicken Geprek With Green Fried Rice Meal ($5), where the fried chicken was crispy on the outside, yet juicy and tender on the inside. We also didn’t find it overly battered, which is a common woe when it comes to fried chicken.

This meal also comes with a serving of their famous green rice, fried with lime leaves, making for spice-heavy and fragrant rice. This set is rounded up with a fried egg, along with a side of onion crackers.

For a spicy kick, dollop on the sambal chilli that boasts salty, spicy, and tangy notes.

We also tried the Chicken Geprek Viral Cheese With Rice ($5.50), which stars nacho cheese drizzled over the fried chicken, adding rich, creamy flavours to the dish.

You can also enjoy your meal with fried offerings such as Fried Tempe ($1.50) and Fried Eggplant ($1.50), both being commonly found in Indonesian cuisine. If you can’t decide, order a  Snacks Combo ($3) for a bit of both.
