Singapore has plenty of zi char eateries, but there most of them serve a combination of seafood and wok-fried dishes, with a distinctly Hokkien slant. Few we’ve come across, aside from JB Ah Meng or the newer Ah Fu & Co, have a menu dominated by Malaysian classics. Recently, though, we chanced upon JB Tai Pai Tong.

Located in 261 Serangoon Central, next to Serangoon Stadium and its nearby McDonald’s, as well as Yishun’s Northpoint Bizhub, JB Tai Pai Tong offers a menu packed with all the beloved Malaysian zi char classics we’d typically have to cross the border for, as well as some more local items.

It is a must, when visiting, to order their KL Dai Lok Mee ($6). Also known as KL Hokkien Mee, dai lok mee features thick noodles wok fried in a sweet soya-based sauce—equal measures smoky, slurpable, and just the right amount of sweet and savoury. If you’re on team white lor mee, the stall also offers their take, the KL White Lor Mee, for $6. Unlike the usual darker lor mee, the white alternative takes its cues from Henghua cuisine and features a lighter, seafood broth.

They also have Dai Pai Tong Fried Bee Hoon ($6), a signature dish that you’ve got to try if you love JB-style fried bee hoon.

Aside from these three dishes, JB Tai Pai Tong has a wealth of seafood items to order if you’re feeling like you want to splurge a little. These include Hot Plate Stingray ($16), Hot Plate Red Snapper ($16), and Butter Fried Sotong ($12). The latter dish, along with their Butter Pork Ribs ($10), is definitely one to try out. Deep-fried pieces of squid and pork ribs are tossed in a silky, buttery sauce that’s a little bit spicy.
Finally, round off the meal with some veggies. The Sambal Sweet Potato Leaves ($7) are a popular option, a nice change from the usual sambal kang kong.
