Several mall food courts have undergone major facelifts lately, with Raffles City’s The Food Place and VivoCity’s Kopitiam among those we’ve covered. The subject of this article, however, might be the most conceptual one so far. We’re talking about Food Junction at Junction 8, which has reopened with a retro diner concept.

With furnishing straight out of an 80s American film and vinyl records plastered everywhere, the new space certainly isn’t your average kopitiam. And aside from its aesthetic appeal, there are 17 new stalls to check out here, along with some returning favourites.

One exciting addition is Cha Han, offering Japanese-inspired fried rice by the Akashi Group. Options here include the Egg Fried Rice with Teriyaki Chicken ($8.30), Garlic Fried Rice with Yaki Niku ($8.80), and the most luxurious of the bunch, the Garlic Fried Rice with Tender Steak Cubes ($16.80).

There’s also Zhang Ji Yun Jiao, where you can get Shandong-style handmade dumplings. Enjoy the classic Pork Dumplings (from $8.50 for 10 pieces) either steamed or fried, and remember to pair them with Chinese vinegar and ginger. Other options here include Crab Roe Pork Dumplings (from $9.50 for 10 pieces) and Scallion Xiao Long Bao ($7.80 for six pieces).

At the back of the food court, you’ll find Japan Street, an area dedicated to Japanese and Korean eats. As you can tell from the picture above, it’s fashioned to look like a Japanese night market.

Stalls in this section include Myung Ga II Minipress, a spinoff of the popular restaurant at Bukit Timah Plaza and Tanjong Pagar. They’re best known for their cold noodles AKA Mul-Naengmye ($9.90), as well as the crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside Donkatsu ($12.90).

Shabu Bar, Food Junction’s first hotpot concept since its debut in 1993, can also be found here. Prices start from an affordable $12.90 here, so you can feast on shabu shabu without breaking the bank.
