Katong Sin Chew: Heritage Bakery With Popular Curry Buns And Pandan Kaya Cake

Katong Sin Chew Cake Shop

Shoutout to fans of old-school bakeries including the highly popular Garden Pastry & Cake and Uncle Lee Confectionery; here’s another one to add to your radar: Katong Sin Chew Cake Shop.

This traditional bakery has been in the East since the 1960s, before settling at their current Bedok North location in 1978. It remains family-run, and still prepares all their bakes entirely from scratch, by hand, to this day.

Many living in the area are regulars of Katong Sin Chew, especially because the bakery sells top-tier curry buns and pandan kaya cake.

The Curry Buns here are priced at $1.70 each, and are only sold between 1pm to 2:30pm each day. Head down as soon as you can as they sell out fast.

The reason why these curry buns are so popular is their delicious filling. A generous amount of potatoes and bits of chicken are cooked in a house-made rempah, prepared from a secret blend of spices unique to Katong Sin Chew.

Their Pandan Kaya Cake ($1.70) is another must-order. This bestseller sees two types of chiffon sponge—vanilla and chocolate or pandan—layered with a coconuty kaya, then topped with a dense kaya kueh.

While these two treats are what Katong Sin Chew is best known for, a quick look at their extensive bakery menu will unearth gems equally worth your attention. They’ve got a wide range of nostalgic cream cakes, muffins, swiss rolls, and tarts, as well as sugar doughnuts, and a line-up of buns in a variety of other fillings.

The Coconut Bun ($1.70) is another one to grab if you can get your hands on it. Instead of the usual orange or brown coconut filling tinged with gula melaka or palm sugar, Katong Sin Chew’s version is filled with all-natural white coconut.
