Khao Soi Mae Sai sells cheap curry noodles in Chiang Mai

In our Chiang Mai food guide, we waxed lyrical about khao soi, a delicious Northern Thai dish of noodles drenched in an aromatic curry. This uber-shiok street food has a strong fanbase worldwide, having won the title of “best soup in the world” on online platform Taste Atlas just last year.

This time, we’re placing the spotlight on Khao Soi Mae Sai, one of the more popular street stalls selling said dish in Chiang Mai, Thailand. A 15-minute drive from Chiang Mai International Airport with take you to this humble eatery, which has earned a spot on the Michelin Guide—it was just crowned a Bib Gourmand eatery in 2023.

Locals and tourists flock to the stall for their Khao Soy with Chicken (฿50/~S$2): springy egg noodles in a sweet, coconutty broth, topped with a whole chicken drumstick and crispy noodle bits for crunch. To cut through the richness, preserved veggies, raw onions, and a lime wedge are served on the side.

The chicken is fall-off-the-bone tender while retaining its juiciness. Pair the shreds of meat with some broth for a savoury, satisfying mouthful.

Over at the open kitchen, you’ll spot a huge cauldron of the famous chicken curry simmering away. The noodles are prepared upon order, so each portion arrives at your table fresh and piping hot.

Should you want more variety, order the Pork Kway Teow Soup (฿45/~S$1.80). This simple yet comforting dish features rice noodles in a clear broth, complete with minced meat, char siew, and pork balls. Radish chunks and copious amounts of fried garlic add texture and flavour to the soup.

The noodles are cooked just right so they remain springy and chewy, pairing well with the savoury broth and condiments.

Do note that Khao Soi Mae Sai tends to get crowded nearing lunchtime, so try to visit earlier, as soon as they open, to beat the queue.
