This SMU Kiosk Serves Honey Butter And Biscoff Yaowarat-Style Buns

Khoon Coffeehouse Express in SMU has Yaowarat-style buns

If you’re looking for an affordable dining option around town, here’s one more place to add to the list: Khoon Coffeehouse Express in Singapore Management University, or SMU. The kiosk, located in the School of Economics/Social Sciences building, has a small menu of bites and drinks, including, most notably, their take on the trendy Yaowarat-style buns.

Nothing on the menu here is priced above $10. The most expensive item, the Truffle Cream Chicken Sausage Baked Rice Set, costs just $6.80, and that includes a drink! What’s more, staff and students of SMU are entitled to a 10% discount, with an additional 5% off for each school on specific days of the week.

The Yaowarat-style buns at Khoon Coffeehouse Express come in six variants, priced between $2.20 and $2.40. They are freshly toasted on a grill, then plumped up with a filling of your choice.

For the traditionalist, there’s Kaya Milk ($2.20), filled with the luscious jade-hued pandan spread.

One of their most popular buns is Lotus Biscoff ($2.50), which oozes with the caramelised biscuit cream. If you’re getting the Honey Butter ($2.40), dig in with wet wipes at the ready, as you’ll find the bun slicked with lashings of honey.

Other popular flavours include Sweet Milk ($2.20), laced with condensed milk, as well as Peanut Butter ($2.20) and Chocolate ($2.20).

For a more substantial meal, Khoon Coffeehouse Express has 10 rice and noodle sets that you can choose from, with the easiest on any budget being their vegetarian-friendly Creamy Mushroom Baked Rice Set ($4.40). If you’re looking for burgers, they’ve got those too, such as the Chicken Sausage with Egg Burger ($4.40). Their most popular item by far, however, is lu rou fan, or Taiwanese Braised Pork Rice Set ($6), with the noodle alternative being well-loved too.

If you’re having the Taiwanese Braised Pork Noodle Set ($6), it comes generously portioned with thick-cut la mian, tasty braised pork, and a whole seasoned, hard-boiled egg.

They’ve got interesting drinks too, including Coconut Foam Coffee (from $4.20), Lotus Biscoff Coffee (from $4.50), and Honey Butter Coffee (from 3.30). The latest addition is Sweet Potato Latte (from $3.90)—you can choose to have this hot or cold.

For more SMU eats, check out Onalu for house-made bagel sandwiches! Another cheap eat near SMU is A9 Noodle House, where 15 dumplings cost just $4, which you can have with mala noodles too.

Address: 90 Stamford Road, #01-75, School of Economics/Social Sciences, Singapore Management University, Singapore 178903
Opening hours: Mon-Fri 8am to 8pm, Sat 9:30am to 7pm
