Madras Coffee House in Little India has unique teh tarik

Little India is one place where, at every turn of the corner, I will learn about something new and special on offer. Madras Coffee House is one of my recent new finds as they offer a different kind of teh tarik that many Singaporeans might not have tried or heard of: teh tarik made with jaggery sugar.

Madras Coffee House’s Teh Tarik ($1.80) is sweetened with nattu sakkarai AKA jaggery sugar, a kind of raw cane sugar extracted from palm trees through traditional methods. This gives it a caramelly taste akin to maple syrup.

Many enjoy the sweet, vanilla-like aroma of the jaggery sugar. You’ll also get a kick of spice that tastes somewhat like masala chai upon the first sip.

Do note that the stall does not have dine-in seating, so we recommend getting them to-go.

Customers also like to pair their drinks with a wide selection of Indian desserts and snacks! You can get their Badusha ($1), which is essentially a glazed doughnut made with maida flour, AKA a more refined version of all-purpose flour which makes the doughnut extra fluffy. This is said to go well with tea.

For more tea-filled goodness, check out Tarik cafe, a cafe in Bugis offering kopi and teh with a modern twist! Or if you are in the area, read our Tekka Centre food guide for prawn mee and Indian rojak.
