Popular Malaysian cafe The Coffee Code has landed on our shores, right in the heart of the CBD. The Tanjong Pagar cafe has a unique sweet-savoury number: the Bak Kwa Waffles ($18), which comes with your choice of waffle, topped with chicken bak kwa, chicken floss, cornflakes, and cream. For something more usual, try the Berries Love You ($17), and top up $1 to get their Nian Gao Waffle, which is said to boast a crispy outer layer and chewy middle.

Surrey Hills Grocer offers an interesting rendition of the mochi waffle at their Raffles City outlet. The Mochi Egglet Waffle ($26++) is a riff on the Hong Kong-style egglet waffles—you get a dense and chewy egglet waffle served warm, with a jar of chocolate sauce, whipped cream, and berries. The Aussie-style cafe has other showstopping desserts too, including the Double Fried Donut French Toast ($22++), which pairs crispy French toast with nutty pistachio praline.

The Better Scoop is a popular dessert cafe in Serangoon that sells handmade waffles and ice cream. Popular gelato spot gelatolabo serves up some of the most artisanal, gourmet frozen desserts across their three outlets: Faber Drive, Joo Chiat, and Everton Park. They’re also known for their Tokyo Mochi Waffles ($7.90), made with Japanese flour and a mochi filling. Do note that this item is not available at their Joo Chiat outlet, but if you’d like to enjoy it at home, you can order it online! Onne Cafe is a new kid on the Outram Park block that’s been making waves for their Japanese-fusion fare. Go for the Mochi Waffles ($9++), available in two flavours: Dirty Charcoal and Matcha Green Tea. These light and airy waffles come studded with visible rice cakes for a chewy texture.
