If your mouth is always “itchy” and need to munch on something, MoNo is for you! They are a social enterprise aiming to promote food sustainability in Singapore by educating the public about food waste. You can find them on the second floor of the Yue Hwa Chinese Products building located in Chinatown!
Items on offer here are shelf-stable food close to or past their “best before” dates. MoNo redistributes excess stock from supermarkets and suppliers that would otherwise be sent to the bin.Â
To buy the items, simply grab a box according to how many snacks you are planning to get. If you’re there just for the experience, we recommend getting the $10 to $12 box. To buy more, get the $25 to $30 box instead. Then, fill the box up to the brim with as many groceries as you like! Just don’t overfill the box. Once done, pay any amount within the range stated on the box.
When we went there, we were amazed by the variety of groceries. There was something new and interesting with every turn of the corner! The items available in MoNo are largely dependent on food suppliers’ donations, so every visit will likely be different.Â
Here are some items we got: the premium Scallop & Soy Dashi Pretz! This Japanese snack flavour is hard to find in Singapore. Â
We also found atas coffee pods from artisan coffee makers. We got these Specialty Coffee Capsules from the well-known brand The Coffee Academics.Â
If you are planning to make shabu shabu for a get-together, get this Little Sheep Hotpot Soup Base. This brand is one of Haidilao’s prominent competitors, so you know their soup bases are pretty legit.Â
They also had a refrigerator to store some cold items. We got this Vanilla Flavoured Yogurt With Oreo Cookie Crumbs, a bowl of plain yoghurt that comes with a small cup of Oreo bits for added texture and sweetness.Â
There’s even a food sample section to try some before bringing them home!Â
