On days I crave an onigiri, my go-to spot is 7-Eleven because it’s the most affordable and accessible choice. But recently, I came across Nippon Bite, a stand-alone kiosk selling freshly made Okinawa onigiri in over 10 flavours at Tampines 1 and AMK Hub.
One of Nippon Bite’s must-try items is their Crispy Chicken Katsu Onigiri ($6.90)—a hearty meal featuring three types of proteins: crispy chicken katsu, luncheon meat, and a fluffy omelette. Depending on your preference, you can choose a creamy mentaiko sauce, a sweet-tangy honey mustard sauce, or a nutty-savoury peanut butter sauce that’s not commonly found in Singapore.
Another recommended item is their Grilled Mentaiko Scallops Onigiri ($6.90). This is a safe bet if you love seafood, as the seared scallops add a delicate sweetness that helps to mellow down any fishy taste. The torched mentaiko sauce comes slightly charred for a smoky finishing touch!Â
Speaking of seafood, Nippon Bite’s Ebi Tempura Onigiri ($6.90) is another banger, pairing an addictive crunch from the crisp batter with the juciness of plump, fresh prawn. Besides mentaiko, you can opt for tartar and ketchup mayo.
With two branches conveniently found at Tampines 1 and AMK Hub, Nippon Bite is easily accessible via Tampines MRT Station and Ang Mo Kio MRT Station. Do note that there are no dine-in seats, as both branches are grab-and-go kiosks.
If you’re in either of these areas and find yourself stumped on what to eat, read our Tampines 1 food guide or Ang Mo Kio food guide for more tasty recommendations.
