As someone who’s lived in Tampines my whole life, one eatery that I’m always hearing about is Rajarani Thosai, a popular breakfast spot in Tampines. This hawker stall garners long queues daily, with patrons snagging up their signature thosai, AKA dosa, and appam from as early as 7am!

Run by a mother and son duo, this hawker stall has been a favourite of many people living near the Tampines Round Market & Food Centre. Their thosai and appam boast a distinct homely taste, and that’s because the stall sticks to the traditional method of making them from scratch. This method includes grinding the soaked beans by hand and preparing their own dhal, sambar, and chutneys.

For those unfamiliar with thosai, it’s essentially a thin and savoury South Indian pancake made from a blend of fermented lentils and rice. It’s best enjoyed with chutney and sambar for an added burst of flavour. The Masala Thosai ($4) is one of their best-selling items, featuring soft and fluffy spiced potatoes within a crispy and thin pancake.

If you prefer keeping it simple, their Plain Thosai ($2.50) makes for a light and easy meal. Otherwise, go for the Masala Egg Onion Thosai ($5), which is stuffed with masala potatoes, onions, and eggs. Other interesting flavours include the Crispy Cereal Thosai ($3.50), Cheese Butter Thosai ($4.50), and Cheese Egg Butter Thosai ($5).

Appam, on the other hand, has a thicker and fluffier centre, and it’s made from fermented rice batter and coconut milk. It’s served with desiccated coconut and palm sugar or with sambar and chutney. Go for the Butter Appam ($2.50), an indulgent treat that has butter-glazed appam served with sweet palm sugar and desiccated coconut.

Alternatively, go for the Cheese Appam ($2.50) for a blend of sweet and savoury flavours.
