Every other person I know has recently been to Japan, is on a plane to the Land of the Rising Sun, or has plans to head there soon. Stuck here in Singapore, I’m just glad that a popular shaved ice AKA kakigori spot—from Tokyo no less—has returned to Singapore. The Sakanoue Cafe pop-up store is open from now till 11 April 2024 in the basement of Isetan Scotts Singapore.
This year’s menu features many fan-favourite flavours, such as pistachio raspberries and uji matcha. These flavours are on rotation daily, so each time you drop by the pop-up, you may be presented with a different set of choices.
For the unfamiliar, kakigori is similar to bingsu, except that bingsu is milk-based, whereas kakigori is traditionally shaved from a frozen block of mineral water. The resulting ice powder is so fine and fluffy, it’s sometimes called angel snow.
This is best embodied by the classic Strawberry Cream Kakigori ($14), which features layers of shaved ice, milk syrup, and strawberry sauce, all topped with a super light fresh whipped cream.
For a zestier alternative, look out for the Yuzu Mascarpone Cheese Kakigori ($16). Here, shaved ice, yuzu sauce, lemon zest, cookie crumbles, and whipped cream all combine for a fragrant and tangy dessert that’s perfect for beating the heat.
Out of all the flavours we tried, our favourite was the Pistachio Raspberry Kakigori ($16). Raspberry stewed in red wine is the central ingredient here, and it blends incredibly well with the refreshing shaved ice and nutty layers of pistachio espuma cream.
