When thinking of supper spots in Little India, chicken rice is probably the last thing that comes to mind. Yet, Sam Leong St Chicken Rice is one spot you won’t want to overlook. Established in 1992, this family-run stall serves up flavourful chicken rice that can hold its own against your usual supper favourites. The best part is it’s halal and open 24 hours!
The shop offers Poached Chicken Rice at just $3.50. Expect juicy, succulent chicken slices, served with aromatic rice. Enjoy it with their punchy house-made chilli sauce and freshly ground ginger paste for the perfect bite of salty, umami goodness. According to online reviews, the rice is said to be fragrant, and the portion of the set is generous.
As good as their chicken rice is, don’t miss out on their other dishes as well, such as their Signature Ginseng Chicken Soup ($3.80), which mimics the traditional samgyetang experience without breaking the bank. It’s described as being rich with an earthy ginseng flavour, pairing perfectly with the oily fragrance of the chicken rice. The Braised Bean Curd ($1.20) and Braised Egg ($1.20) are also highly raved about as great add-ons to your meal.
The eatery is a seven-minute walk from Farrer Park MRT Station. For more food options nearby, check out our City Square Mall food guide. If you’re looking for more halal supper hideouts, check out our guide to the best 24/7 halal eateries.
