Mention Serangoon food and my friends will list of NEX food options, but as much as we love going to the mall, this neighbourhood has more to offer. Serangoon is home to cafes that will have you camping for brunch, tea and even supper! Check out these best Serangoon cafes the next time you’re looking to dine in the area.
Specialising in molten lava cookies, Kooks Creamery puts a creative spin on the traditional lava cake. With over 18 ice cream flavours to pair your lava cookie with, you won’t be running out of choices and combinations anytime soon. A scoop of ice cream is priced at $4.80, while a double scoop costs $9. Premium flavours come with a $1 top-up. We recommend adding a Matcha Lava Cookie ($8.50) for the ultimate experience; the earthiness of the green tea balances out the sweetness of the ice cream. There’s also a Chocolate ($8) flavour, or you can opt for their Mochi Waffles (from $9) instead.

Serangoon Gardens is home to several cafes, but Apollo Coffee Bar stands out as a longtime fave. Some liken the cafe to those in Bali, while others say it’s a nod to Australian coffee houses. Either way, expect quality cups of coffee, as well as a day and night menu. Their Hotcakes & Passionfruit ($16.35+) is a popular pick, where diner-style hotcakes are topped with a tart passionfruit curd. Else, if you’re coming by for dinner, they’ve got fusion mains served from 5pm onwards, including a Wagyu Beef Burger ($23.44+), and Carbonara ($22.89+): smoky bacon cream sauce, parmesan, egg, and shimeji mushrooms with spaghetti.

Located right next to Joji’s Diner is sister cafe Joji’s Sandwich Parlour, a late-night American diner specialising in sandwiches. We recommend their Classic Reuben ($28), which stars generous amounts of black Angus beef brisket, yellow mustard, sauerkraut, and sliced cheese. Other popular picks include Joji’s Grilled Cod Sandwich ($16) and Slapjack Sandwich ($22): three house-made buttermilk pancakes with corned beef, salami, sunny side up, jam, and cheese.

On the food menu is a handful of the usual brunch suspects, both sweet and savoury, from Eggs Benedict ($16++) and French Toast ($18.90++). Most orders come with bread that is freshly baked daily in-house, but if you want to try out the full selection fresh from the oven, we recommend the Bread Basket ($11++), which serves two, and comes with butter and jam.

Beat the heat and cool down with an icy dessert at Ghost Kakigori, a fairly new addition to NEX. If you love orh nee as much as we do, get the Snowy Taro ($13.90), which is said to be packed with taro paste and sago, and then drenched in purple sweet potato syrup. Their signature Bean & Matcha ($14.90) is equally popular; this dessert stars shaved ice with sweet red beans and a cream, doused in matcha syrup and crowned with more red bean paste. Besides kakigori, you’ll also find a small range of dorayaki AKA Japanese pancakes on the menu.
