Situated between Bedok and Tampines is quaint neighbourhood Simei, where Changi General Hospital is located at. The estate is rather charming, and you can literally explore the whole area via foot if you so desire. Aside from East Point Shopping Mall, which houses great restaurants, Simei is also home to plenty of hawkers and more. Here are 10 Simei food places to check out when you’re in the area!


1. Snack Shop


Located next to Simei MRT station, Snack Shop is a fuss-free hawker stall that offers chicken rice at a wallet-friendly price of $2.50. The chicken is soft, while the savoury rice is fragrant and not too oily. The garlic chilli is addictive and adds a good amount of heat to every mouthful. If you are feeling ravenous, Snack Shop also offers other zi char dishes to fill you up.

2. Metta Café

Started by Metta Welfare Association, Metta Café seeks to train and create employment opportunities for youths with special needs through vocational training in baking, meal preparation, kitchen and customer service. The food here is catered to both vegetarians and non-vegetarians, and the menu changes every month.

The lunch menu runs from Monday to Saturday from 11:30am to 1:30pm; Sunday lunch lasts until 2:30pm. All mains on the daily menu go at $4, with popular orders being Olive Fried Rice, Hor Fun and Tom Yam Fried Bee Hoon. For a more complete meal, you can add on French Fries ($2) or Dessert of the Day ($1.20).

3. Siam Kitchen


Break out in a sweat when you eat at Siam Kitchen. This halal-certified Thai restaurant is known for delivering spice-redolent dishes that Thai folks would be proud of. Go for their classic Seafood Phad Thai ($12.90++ for small, $16.90++ for medium), which comes with squid, pieces of fried fish, and prawns. If you prefer something soupy, the Red Tom Yum Noodles with Seafood ($13.90++, $15.90++) features a fiery red broth came filled with glass noodles and oceanic goodies.

4. Souperstar

Look forward to a fuss-free meal when you visit Souperstar! For a full meal, order their Souper Combos, which start from $8.50 for a soup, traditional popiah and a drink. 

A hot favourite on a cold rainy day is the Boston Clam Chowder featuring a creamy soup made of blended juicy clams, potatoes, carrots and celery. Their popiah features more than your usual turnip and prawn fillings, but includes options such as Sweet Thai Chicken and Seafood Wasabi Mayo.

5. 85 Redhill Teochew Fishball Noodles

You don’t have to travel all the way to Bukit Merah to try the famous 85 Redhill Teochew Fishball Noodles. Known for their springy noodles and bouncy fish balls, this hawker stall has garnered a strong following since it was opened. For first-timers, their Signature Noodles ($5.50) is a must, which comes with fish balls, fish cake slices, dumpling and more.

6. LOR Duck

From the famous Redhill Lor Duck Rice & Noodles comes LOR Duck, a casual eatery situated in Eastpoint Mall specialising in a braised duck concept. Their Signature Braised Duck ($8) boasts a layer of fatty skin that melts in your mouth. It also comes doused in a dark sauce , that was not too cloying. If you want pork belly and tofu to go with your duck, order the Lor Duck Braised Platter ($14) instead.

7. Mirana Cake House

We were surprised by the quality of bakes from Mirana Cake House. Packed full, their flavoured buns have more filling than bread and will definitely satiate any hunger. Great for a quick snack is their Char Siew Bun ($1.30). But if you prefer something sweeter, get the Coconut Bun ($1.20) instead. They also offer swiss rolls at $0.90 a slice.

8. Sakura Family Restaurant

Sakura Family Restaurant is a halal-certified Thai restaurant that serves up familiar zi char dishes. The menu offers a wide variety of dishes – from the crowd-favourite Oyster Omelette ($12++ for small, $16++ for medium, $20++ for large) to  Golden Oats Chicken ($10++ for small, $15++ for medium, $20++ for large), there is something for everyone. For seafood lovers, Chilli Crab (from $29++) is a must-order.

9. Paradise Classic

Managed by the same company behind the popular Beauty in the Pot, Paradise Classic is a Chinese restaurant that’s great for dinner with the fambam. Ideal for two to three people, their Set Menu A ($88.80++) comes with seven courses and is a steal. Dishes include Traditional Double-boiled Soup, Stir-fried Shrimps with Sambal and Fermented Peas, and Yangzhou Fried Rice.

10. Jiaxiang Pancake

Located next to Simei MRT is Jiaxiang Pancake that pushes out more than your usual peanut min jiang kueh. Instead, they have pretty interesting renditions such as Black Sesame ($1.40) and Cheese with Egg and Hotdog ($2). The pancake is more on the thinner side, and is crispy on the outside while fluffy within.
