This Hougang Stall Serves Wet-Style Hokkien Mee With Generous Lard For Just $5

Simon Road Hokkien Mee in Hougang

Fans of hokkien mee ought to add this stall to their radar: Simon Road Hokkien Mee is a legendary, three-generation-strong stall that is famed for their wet-style hokkien mee.

The stall’s flagship is currently located in Blk 210 Hougang Street 21, and draws flocks of hungry diners daily, ready to queue for a plate of their wok hei-infused hokkien mee.

While Simon Road Hokkien Mee may not be as recognisable a name as other big players such as Nam Sing and Tiong Bahru Yi Sheng, they’re equally worthy of attention.

Prices start at $5 a plate, and you get a generous portion that checks all the must-haves for a solid plate of hokkien mee. The noodles are silky, and glossy from the lard enriched prawn broth. A lick of garlic underscores each mouthful, adding depth.

The stall doesn’t skimp on toppings either. You get fresh prawns, squid, and pork belly slices. The big winner, however, is the sheer amount of fried lard that comes with a serving, at no extra cost.

Simon Road Hokkien Mee also offers two types of house-made chillis to go with your order. The first is a sambal, sweet and smoky, while the latter is a brighter chilli, laced with belachan paste prepared in-house. Lime is also added for some zing.

While the stall specialises in wet-style hokkien mee, they do take requests for dry-style if the crowd isn’t too immense.

If you’re unable to dine at their Hougang stall, check out their other eatery at 6 St George Road, open from Tuesday to Sunday, 10am to 9pm.
