Slow Day Cafe: Popular Matcha Cafe In JB With Genmaicha Cake And Strawberry Matcha

Slow Day Cafe is a popular matcha cafe in Johor Bahru

I’ve been to a fair share of cafes in Singapore and Johor Bahru that specialise in matcha drinks and desserts, but not all are memorable. Slow Day Cafe in Mount Austin, though, made an impression on my recent visit to JB—the cafe is a good example of how tea-infused treats should be done. Here, you can enjoy a selection of drinks and desserts in matcha, hojicha, and genmaicha flavours.

The current exchange rate is RM1 = ~S$0.30 as of 17 March 2025.

Strawberry matcha has been all the craze lately, so we got a cup to see how it fared. Their Strawberry Matcha (RM17.90) features three beautiful layers of sweet strawberry compote, fresh milk, and a matcha shot. I’m not the biggest fan of this combination as it often leans sweet, but I appreciated that the cafe’s rendition wasn’t cloying. It’s slightly milky, which means the earthy-grassy notes take a backseat, so only get this if you prefer your matcha drinks on the milder side.

I preferred the Matcha Espresso (RM17.90) as the bitter coffee notes and umami matcha flavour blended well. Interestingly, the matcha consistency was almost like a paste of sorts, and because it was thicker and denser, its vegetal taste—which I enjoyed—was prominent in the dirty matcha latte.

For dessert, I tried the gorgeous Genmaicha Cake (RM28) instead of another matcha-flavoured item. You can expect an aromatic nuttiness distinctly different from matcha, with hints of roasted brown rice. Texture-wise, this dessert reminded me of a rich gateau cake!

Drinks and desserts aside, Slow Day Cafe doubles as an art jamming studio, where creative workshops are held for you and your friends to engage in. At the time of writing, there’s a Painting Workshop for just $13.55 on Klook’s official website. We encourage you to check their Instagram account for workshop-related updates.

Slow Day Cafe is tucked away on the second floor along a stretch of shophouses in Mount Austin. The cafe closes at 12am on selected days, making it a chill hangout that doesn’t involve alcohol or heavy supper foods.
