Get Affordable Handrolls Under $4 At This Japanese Eatery In The CBD

SORU Handroll has cheap Japanese handrolls in Telok Ayer

Whenever I think of good Japanese food, I usually picture premium ingredients at sky-high prices. But that’s not the case at SORU Handroll. Located at ICON Link@ClubStreet, in the heart of Telok Ayer, this new eatery offers artisanal Japanese handrolls for as low as $3.60+!

While you can get their handrolls by the piece, we recommend ordering them in sets of three for $10.90, which comes to just $3.63 per roll.

FYI, if you choose to include a Premium or Deluxe Roll in your set, you’ll have to spend an additional $1 and $2 per roll, respectively.

We loved the Aburi Engawa Shoyu ($5.90), starring silky, melt-in-your-mouth tender engawa, torched with a savoury shoyu glaze. The roll is finished with a dash of spicy togarashi powder, AKA Japanese chilli pepper, fresh chives, and crunchy takuan slices: sweet-tangy yellow pickled radish.

The Spicy Salmon Crunch ($4) was another hit, featuring large chunks of fresh salmon, smothered in a subtly spicy mayo, and topped with fragrant chives and a house-made crunchy furikake blend.

If your inner carnivore is craving something hearty, go for the Wagyu Yakiniku ($6.90). Each roll comes loaded with juicy Wagyu slices brushed with a sweet-savoury yakiniku glaze, and garnished with crispy fried garlic chips, chives, and a dollop of black tobiko.

Besides the handrolls, they also have several donburi bowls on their menu. Choose between six flavours, including their signature Gyu-Don ($9.90), starring a load of tender beef slices and caramelised onions, simmered in a sweet gyudon soy sauce, and finished with chives, furikake, and delicate onsen eggs.

Pro tip: Order a set of two donburi bowls for $15. This works out to be $7.50 per bowl, which we consider a great deal in our books.

While the eatery offers dine-in seating, they can only accommodate up to 28 diners at a time. The place can get quite busy during peak hours, so we recommend heading down early to snag a seat.

SORU Handroll is located at ICON Link@ClubStreet, a quick six-minute walk from Maxwell MRT Station and Telok Ayer MRT Station. It’s also within walking distance of Chinatown MRT Station and Raffles Place MRT Station.
