Having spent some time working in the bustling business hubs in One-north, I thought I knew all the lunch spots around, but Subarashii Super DonĀ somehow always flew under my radar. The storefront looked unassuming at first glance, but the constant stream of diners during peak hours eventually piqued my interest.
Tucked away in a quaint corner near one of the MRT exits, a glance at the glass cases lined with proteins and sides reveals the storeās conceptācai fan with a Japanese twist. Affectionately dubbed āpoint point rice,ā diners can build their own bowl, or go straight for one of the pre-customised Signature Dons (from $9.50+).
Diners can opt for one of 3 different options: Regular Don ($6.90+) with three dishes, Power Don ($8.90+) with one protein and two dishes, and Super Don ($9.90+) with two proteins and two dishes.
Protein enthusiasts will be delighted by an abundance of options, including Mentaiko Chicken, Ebi Fry, Unagi Kabayaki, and Yakiniku Beef. These can be paired with toppings such as Tamagoyaki, Braised Daikon, Pumpkin Croquette, and Miso Tofu.
For a balanced meal, my colleague and I both opted for the Power Don. I built my bowl around their Teriyaki Chicken, which, though initially a bit tough to pull apart, was tender and full of rich, glazed teriyaki flavours.
Accompanying the meal was their unique Cauliflower Karaage, featuring a battered layer encasing a piece of cauliflower. It was an ingenious way to elevate a vegetable that is often shunned, though it could have benefited from a touch more crispiness. The same could be said for their Chicken Gyozaāits hearty meat filling made it a smart ācheatā protein choice for the price of a topping.
We went with the Mentaiko Salmon in the other bowl, which the staff blow-torched just before serving. This enhanced the richness of the creamy mentaiko sauce, perfectly complemented by the salmonās melt-in-your-mouth texture.
It was paired with Garlic Broccoli, which had a pleasant hint of garlic, but their Roasted Spicy King Oyster Mushroom fell short of the spicy kick I was expecting. Beneath it all sat a fluffy bed of rice that wasnāt overly clumpy, topped with pickled cucumbers to cut through the flavors, and finished with a drizzle of Japanese soy sauce.
If youāre looking for an elevated way to satisfy your cai fan cravings, Subarashii Super DonĀ may be the place for you. Their high-quality ingredients and wide selection make for a hearty meal, though there could be a greater variety of vegetables to better cater to the health-conscious. While seating is limited in the small outlet, it remains highly appealing to those seeking a quick, satisfying bite on a hectic workday.
