Tempura fans will definitely know of Tempura Makino, a specialty tempura restaurant that hails from the Hyogo Prefecture, near Kobe. They’ve got more than 10 outlets in Japan, and five in Singapore, including their latest new opening in Jem. To celebrate this new opening, diners get 30% off their total bill from 2 October to 5 October.
This is Tempura Makino’s first outlet in the West, following openings in VivoCity, Great World, Suntec City, and Jewel Changi.
They’re renowned for being the place to go for affordable, yet high-quality tempura. All the ingredients that go into preparing the tempura batter and their signature dashi, as well as their dipping sauce, are air-flown from Japan. The eggs used in the batter, for example, come from Okinawa—where some of the best Japanese eggs are farmed.
Tempura Makino’s outlets offer three menus: lunch, dinner, and omakase. For lunch, the menu has several bento options and set meals, as well as tendon. The Prawn & Vegetable Set ($20++) is a perennial fave here, starring three pieces of sweet prawns coated in an airy tempura batter and deep-fried. This is accompanied by tempura-ed butternut squash, french bean, and a lotus root. Each set comes with miso soup, a bowl of grade A Nanatsuboshi rice from Hokkaido, and a side dish. Diners at Tempura Makino also enjoy their free-flow homemade yuzu daikon with every order.
The Makino Tendon & Soba Set ($25.90++) is another popular pick. This set comes with tempura prawns, as well as squid, and battered veggies. You get your carbs two ways here: rice and buckwheat soba.Â
If you’re dining with someone who doesn’t particularly like tempura, don’t sweat it, as Tempura Makino also has a selection of donburi bowls.
