5 Unique Local Snacks Available In Singapore Like Chicken Rice Potato Chips

Unique local snacks in Singapore

Talk about crazy snacks and I will always be ready to give you a list of them – from Tabasco chocolates to baked spiders. Most of them are great for their novelty but taste-wise, I hardly go for a second helping. If you are craving for less mainstream snacks that taste good and also wow your friends with their originality, try these unique-flavoured local snacks that can be easily found in Singapore!

1. Hainanese Chicken Rice Potato Chips

From chicken rice bread to chicken rice sushi, I thought I have seen all possible variations of chicken rice dishes. That was until I came across F.EAST’s Hainanese Chicken Rice Potato Chips ($3). While you can’t expect all the flavours of chicken, stock-infused rice, and chilli to be packed into a single bite, their ridged potato chips carry a strong fragrance of ginger sauce that gives an unmistakable reminder of the local delicacy. What’s more, there’s a promotion running from now till 15 July that lets you get four packets at just $10! The promotion is available at NTUC Fairprice, Giant, myCK and Redmart.

Get it from:

7-Eleven
Giant
NTUC Fairprice
myCK stores
Redmart

2. Laksa Potato Chips

Another potato chip flavour from F.EAST is their Singapore Laksa Potato Chips ($3). This one packs a stronger taste compared to the chicken rice potato chips and you can expect several layers of flavours unfolding in each bite. Like your classic bowl of laksa, the chips come with a distinct fragrance of coconut milk, hints of dried shrimp, as well as a finishing spicy kick for the ultimate shiok-ness! Just like the chicken rice chips, you can get four packets of laksa chips, or mix and match, at $10 from now till 15 July at NTUC Fairprice, Giant, myCK and Redmart.

3. Chilli Crab Cookies

Chilli crab-flavoured cookies are a rare find but having an entire fried mini crab on a cookie is probably something you can only find at The Cookie Museum. A mixture of sweet, savoury, and spicy tastes, their Singapore Chilli Crab ($38) comes in a stylish box of 24 cookies that are great as gifts especially for your visiting friends!

Get it from:

4. Durian Kaya

If you are an adventurous fan of kaya, you will have to get your hands on all the different flavoured kaya spreads out there. Uncle Cook’s Durian Kaya ($2.85 for 220g) is one crazy mix that came together surprisingly well. We also tried the Kayamila Calamansi Citrus Kaya ($3.50 for 270g) and enjoyed the fresh zestiness that sets itself apart from typical coconut jam.

Get it from:

5. Tom Yum Nuts

When the mouth starts to itch but you are trying to maintain your health streak, try Amazin’ Graze’s Tom Yum Kaffir Lime Nut Mix ($5.90 for 100g). Refreshingly sour and spicy, the cashews and peanuts are coated with tom yum spices and flecked with bits of kaffir lime that give off a citrusy punch! Another of my personal favourites that you can look out for is their Salted Gula Melaka Granola (from $10.90) that comes with a mix of rolled oats, almonds, cashews, and shredded coconut!

Get it from:

Cold Storage

TANGS – Tang Plaza
Address: 310 Orchard Road, Singapore 238864
Opening hours: Mon-Sat 10:30am to 9:30pm, Sun 11am to 8:30pm

The go-to chips this World Cup season

Nothing beats downing a bowl of laksa or wiping clean a plate of chilli crab sauce with fried mantou. But for the times where you cannot afford to sit down for a big meal or simply have no mood for it, the potato chip version of these classic dishes can act as a quick fix. If you’re a World Cup fan, just grab a packet and munch on the chips as you watch your favourite team score!
