I’m a huge believer in having fried chicken as it is, without any seasoning or dip, because to me, that always tastes the best. But occasionally, I do enjoy a more interesting treat, such as KFC’s Goldspice Salted Egg Fried Chicken. If you, like me, enjoy having fried chicken every now and then, here’s some good news: KFC is launching a spin on the salted egg fried chicken, the Mala Goldspice. This new flavour will be available from 17 July to 3 September, in light of the upcoming National Day.

Starting strong with the newly launched items, we first tried the Mala Goldspice Chicken ($4.60 a piece), then the Mala Goldspice Tenders ($6.80 for three).

Their fried chicken didn’t fall short of my expectations: the skin was deep-fried and crispy, and the meat was tender and juicy.

Upon the first bite, I was invited by the familiar creamy salted egg yolk flavour, quickly followed by a subtle numbing sensation from the mala that held just the right amount of spice. While the mala flavour was overshadowed by the salted egg yolk, I liked that the Sichuan peppercorn bits in the batter added more crunch to the already crispy chicken skin.

I always opt for bone-in chicken pieces whenever possible as I find them more flavourful, but their Mala Goldspice Tenders were surprisingly as delicious and moreish as well.

These tenders are great for those who aren’t big on spices as they are less spicy and less intense in the flavour department. Plus, they are perfect to have on the go as tenders are hassle-free compared to bone-in chicken.

If you still find the Mala Goldspice spicy, I recommend getting a side of their regular Whipped Potato ($3.15) or Coleslaw ($3.15) to quell the heat.

End your meal with the Ondeh Ondeh Egg Tart ($2.40), which will also be available on the menu till 3 September.

Break the pandan-infused egg tart in half, and you get a molten brown sugar core within a flaky pastry topped with shredded coconut. Here’s a tip: buy five tarts and get one free while stocks last!
