What to eat at NEX Food Junction
NEX is a haven for good food in the heart of Serangoon, and that has only gotten better with the reopening of its resident Food Junction after a revamp. All the food brands you know and love will still be on the premises, but this latest iteration of Food Junction NEX also promises eight new stalls from renowned brands, both local and regional, adding to the wealth of eats you can find in the heartland mall.
Yuen Kee Dumpling is one of the most anticipated new names in this food court. Hailing from China, the brand boasts over 5,000 outlets worldwide and the reputation of being China’s top handmade dumplings and wontons franchise.
Marvel as your dumpling order is prepared before your very eyes, freshly folded, boiled, then fried to order. There are five types of dumpling fillings and three types of wonton fillings to choose from, which then come served in your choice of soup or sauce.
If this is your first rodeo at Yuen Kee Dumpling, we highly recommend zoning in on their Shrimp And Crab Roe Pork Wanton In Viral Mixed Sauce With Chilli Oil ($10.80 for 10 pieces). Silky smooth wontons are packed with a juicy minced pork filling studded with pearls of crab roe and then dressed in a mouthwatering peanut-chilli sauce. For the spice adverse, consider their addictively crunchy Signature Fried Dumplings ($6.80 for 6 pieces).
Song Fa Kway Chap, the sister brand to the Michelin-minted Song Fa Bak Kut Teh, has also set up shop at Food Junction NEX.
Our resident kway chap-lovin’ writer rated Song Fa Kway Chap highly when he visited their flagship outlet, praising the medley of delicious braised bites that comes with every order of the Kway Chap Deluxe Set For 1 ($8.90).
While kway chap is comfort food in its own right, it might not be up everyone’s alley. Those in the latter camp can zone in on King Grouper Fish Soup instead for a soul-soothing meal. With 27 outlets in Singapore, King Grouper Fish Soup is beloved for good reason—their farm-to-table fish soup is made using the freshest catch possible. King groupers are caught and processed within just five hours and sent to their islandwide stalls for use in their signature dishes.
The Sliced Grouper Fish Soup is like a warm hug—think a light, gingery broth and sweet, firm slices of giant grouper. A small portion costs $8, while a large serving will set you back $10.
The combination of fish and broth will always hit the spot, but some days, you want that duo with a bit of spice. Here’s where What The Fish comes in. Known for offering eight different flavours of Chongqing grilled fish, What The Fish stands out for being much more affordable than other similar eateries.
You can get a whole fish here to share, but they’ve also recently launched single-portion grilled fish servings for solo diners. Whatever the case, we recommend ordering grilled fish in their mouthwatering, tongue-tingling Spicy Fragrant sauce. Prices start at $9.80.
Western food is a staple at any local food court, so fans will be happy to know that the halal-certified Monster Western now calls Food Junction NEX home. The sprawling menu here has all your favourite Western delights, from chicken cutlets to chops, as well as pasta, burgers, and fried finger food.
The Chicken Steak Aglio Olio ($8.90) is a must-try here. You get major bang for your buck—a huge, juicy chargilled chicken chop and a bed of garlicky, fragrant aglio olio for under $8.90 is a combo that can’t be beat.
Bak chor mee is another heartland hawker favourite. At Mee First, diners can expect a unique take on the classic noodle dish, starring a rich, collagen-laced umami pork bone broth that has been boiled for over four hours.
Dry bak chor mee might be the default way we enjoy the dish nowadays, but Mee First takes us back to the dish’s soupy origins. Honestly, with broth so good, we welcome the throwback. Each portion of the Signature Minced Pork Noodles ($8.50) also comes with springy mee kia or mee pok noodles and a range of toppings, such as handmade fishballs and meatballs, pillows of lard, and even half a hanjuku egg.
We’ve listed all the highlights, but that’s not all Food Junction NEX is dishing up around the clock. At breakfast, Toast Junction, open from 7am, is there to offer diners their kaya toast and kopi fix to start the day.
Looking for a bit of theatre with your lunch or dinner? Bag a seat at Go Teppan Go, a live teppanyaki affair which serves up grilled meats and seafood with flair.
For meals more subdued but no less delicious, there’s Carnivore for melt-in-your-mouth braised pork ribs rice, Wok Paradise for zi char delights, and many, many more stalls worth feasting your way through.
Beyond the slew of quality bites, the food court’s renovation is also here to bring on the vibes. The new food court is bright and airy, with ample tables and chairs so you won’t find yourself jostling for space at mealtimes. Fun decals and artwork also add to how lively the new food court feels.
