Get Kaya Mochi Toast, Lu Rou Fan And More At This Hidden Eatery In Joo Koon

Joo Koon is often misunderstood as an industrial area with little to offer, but you’ll be proven wrong as soon as you step out of Exit A of Joo Koon MRT Station. Just a stone’s throw away from the train station is FairPrice Joo Koon, home to a mega supermarket with places to dine at, such as Ah Bowl Den, a casual eatery serving up local dishes.

Their toast sets caught our attention first. You’ll find them in a separate menu divided into two categories: Classic Sets and Mochi Sets. The former comprises your regular Kaya Butter ($6) toast that comes with two soft-boiled eggs and a hot kopi; you can also choose from four other flavours, such as Taro Butter ($6.40) and Crunchy Peanut Butter ($6). 

You get the same variations under the Mochi Sets, just that each toast includes a stretchy layer of mochi for textural variety. The mochi toast costs $0.30 more than a classic toast—for example, Taro Mochi is priced at $6.70 and Kaya Mochi at $6.30.

While the toasts are great for a quick breakfast run or a midday pick-me-up, the Braised Pork Rice (from $7.80) is a better choice for a hearty lunch or dinner. You can pay an additional $2.50 to make it a set, which comes with one of these three options: braised tau kee, mini ngoh hiang, or any iced drink.

Here’s a tip for spice lovers: change your rice to Koka noodles, which come with a mildly spicy and punchy flavour, by paying an additional $1. This applies to any of the rice bowls, including the Hakka Fermented Crispy Pork Rice (from $7.80) that’s topped with a hard-boiled egg and some veggies.

If you can’t decide what to get, we recommend Heh Heh Laksa (from $6.80), which comes with a rich, coconutty broth, thick rice vermicelli noodles, tofu puffs, fresh prawns, and a hard-boiled egg. Do note that all rice and noodle dishes are available from 11am, except for the Braised Pork Rice and Heh Heh Laksa, which are available all day long.
