Just as I thought I was done checking out most food places around Geylang and Kallang, I was proven wrong when I stumbled upon that area once more while looking for Aljunied MRT Station last week. From zi char to Western food, here’s a list of Aljunied food places that are just minutes away from the MRT station.

Eastern House of Seafood’s Live Boston Lobster Hokkien Mee ($38.80) alone has been enough to draw a continuous crowd to the restaurant. Comprising an entire lobster, this huge plate of savoury Hokkien mee feeds up to three people. It is packed with flavours from the seafood and the generous scoop of sambal chilli on the side. For those on a tight budget, the restaurant has a lunch promotion that runs on weekdays. At $46.80, their set for four comes with Assam Fish Head, Hot Plate Beancurd, Stir Fried Vegetables with Garlic and Sweet & Sour Pork!

Sitting at a corner of Sims Avenue with a humongous signboard that stretches across four stalls, Penang Seafood Restaurant is one eatery that is hard to miss. Like many zi char restaurants, they serve an extensive variety of fried rice, noodles, and vegetables. What makes this restaurant stand out would be their Penang hawker fare. We were impressed by their Penang Fried Kway Teow ($5+) and Penang Assam Laksa ($4.80). To share, we also recommend trying their Fried Sotong With Salted Egg ($15+) and Fermented Pork Belly ($12+)!

If decadent Japanese-Korean rice bowls are like how you’d like to wind down a busy week with, hit up HARU. Prices for their rice bowls start from $10+ and you can get a choose from four different carbs to accompany your main. This includes their very special Japanese pearl rice which had a mild but rich flavour to it. Go for their Bulgogi Beef ($12++) if you’d like some healthy protein in your diet.

With a handful of outlets across the island, Xin Ban Mian is a noodle stall that is slowly making a name for their Pork Belly Ban Mian ($4.50/$5). While the broth looks light, it is packed with flavours from minced meat, egg, pork belly, and vegetables that fill the bowl. As with most ban mian stalls, they also serve other dishes including Tom Yum Ban Mian ($4) and Fried Dumpling Ban Mian ($4), which comes tossed in black sauce!
