Juicy, tender meat encased within a golden batter—just thinking about various tonkatsu offerings never fails to make my mouth water. If you’re craving the dish, here are the best tonkatsu restaurants in Singapore, including katsudon and gyukatsu options in the mix!
TONSHOU hails from Busan, Korea, and is famous for their charcoal-grilled tonkatsu. You won’t want to miss the fatty Hire Katsu Set ($28++), or the leaner Rosu Katsu Set (from $29++), which comes with kimchi and chilled white corn soup—a sweet, creamy appetiser.
The katsu here strikes a perfect balance of crisp, fluffy breading and tender rich meat, which is enhanced with a faint smokiness from the charcoal. Go for the Hokkaido Kurobuta Rosu Katsu Set ($34++) for a more premium cut that is coated in a stunning black, or the Katsu Sando Set ($21++) if you prefer your cutlets sandwiched between soft white bread.

Shin Katsu is a new tonkatsu speciality restaurant in Tanjong Pagar headed by Chef Matsubayashi Masato, the former Head Chef of Ma Maison. Chef Masato spotlights premium cuts of pork from around the world, with one standout being the Mangalica Rosu Katsu Set ($42.90++). This set features Mangalica pork from Hungary, nicknamed the “Kobe beef of pork” for its beautiful marbling and buttery mouthfeel.
Another standout offering is the Mille-Feuille Black Truffle Katsu Set ($37.80++), a unique tonkatsu variation made with thin, delicate layers of pork wrapped around a black truffle centre, all encased in the restaurant’s signature breadcrumb coating. Each set also comes with refillable rice that is pressure-cooked over charcoal, imparting a subtle smoky note.

Easties have long gatekept popular tonkatsu restaurant Katsuya, located along Tanjong Katong Road. Chef-owner Kervin Tay has been perfecting his craft of tonkatsu since opening the restaurant in 2011, following his culinary studies in Tokyo. The recent iteration of their space features an open-concept kitchen, where diners have a full view of the prep work from counter seats.
Purists will want to go for the Rosu Katsu Set ($35++), pork tenderloin fried with a light, crispy batter. For a more premium cut, try the Hokkaido Rosu Set ($42++), or more eclectic katsu offerings such as the Dory Set ($30++) or Unagi Set ($35++).

Tonkatsu ENbiton is a tonkatsu speciality chain that has sprouted across various locations in Singapore. While they had previously offered differing premium pork varieties in their tonkatsu, their flagship right now is Shirakaba Pork sourced from Hokkaido.
You can’t go wrong with the standard Hokkaido Rosu Katsu Set ($23.50++), coming with free-flow cabbage, rice, and tonjiru. However, their menu has since grown extensively, and you’ll find many tantalising katsu options such as the Hokkaido Rosu Katsu Toji Set ($24.90++), Classic Rosu Katsu Tonkotsu Ramen ($23++), and even the Miyazaki Gyukatsu ($43++), which comes with a hot stone grill.

Katsu-an specialises in katsudon AKA deep-fried pork cutlet atop pearl rice. Run by the same team behind Sukiya, the eatery is conveniently located in Suntec City Basement 1.
While you can get their signature Tenderloin Katsu Don from the unbeatable price of $6.90, those willing to splurge can choose from a variety of teishoku sets, such as the Loin Katsu Teishoku (from $8.90) and Tartar Sauce Loin Katsu Teishoku (from $10.90)—still rather well-priced within our books!

One of the stalwarts of the tonkatsu scene, Ma Maison is a Japanese cafe that operates multiple tonkatsu specialty branches around Singapore.
The basic Rosu Katsu Set here starts from $16.80++, but you’ll also find more premium pork katsu options ranging from the Kurobuta Rosu Set ($34.80++) to the Hokkaido Special Shirakaba Rosu Katsu Set ($35.80++), using pigs that live next to pure white snow and lead stress-free and healthy lives. Omu-rice lovers, don’t leave out the Katsu Curry Omu-Rice ($26.80++), a dish owing to their Japanese-style cafe roots.

While it isn’t tonkatsu brand Saboten’s first foray into Singapore—their outlet at Parkway Parade is their third—they’ve teamed up here with okowa chain Tagosaku for a dual offering of Japanese favourites. Everyone’s probably familiar with tonkatsu, but okowa is much more elusive—a sticky rice bento that can include many different ingredients.
The Saboten Special Set ($23.50++) features a good selection of their signature items such as tenderloin and loin katsu, as well as fried ebi, served alongside Koshihikari rice, cabbage, and a bowl of miso soup. If you’d like to try out their okowa alongside the tonkatsu, you can upgrade the Koshihikari rice to okowa rice for $4.50++.

Onkei Tonkatsu is a great place to get a quick tonkatsu fix, owing to its location being right next to Paya Lebar MRT Station! Their menu is rather straightforward—think the standard Onkei Signature Katsu Set (from $16.90++), Mentaiko Rosu Katsu Set ($19.90++), and Miso Rosu Katsu Set ($19.90++).
The restaurant is also popular for their Curry Rosu Katsu Set ($19.90++), for those who want a mildly spicy oomph on their plate. As with all tonkatsu specialty stores, each set comes with free-flow rice, cabbage, and even tonjiru.

We know—this ain’t tonkatsu, but Gyukatsu Kyoto Katsugyu serves up a damn mean beef katsu! With over 70 outlets in Japan, it is the largest beef cutlet specialty chain in the country, and their bastion in Raffles City Shopping Centre was one of the first gyukatsu spots in Singapore.
You’ll be blown away by the A5 Miyazaki Sirloin Gyukatsu Zen ($55++), which is the most premium cut on the menu. A bite or two yields the buttery fat of the wagyu, with the crispy breading perfectly complementing its softness. You can also try different cuts of beef in the Sirloin and Beef Tongue Gyukatsu Zen ($32++), or for those who prefer non-beef options, try the Seafood Katsu Zen ($32++) which comes with shrimp, scallop, and salmon katsu.
