New in: popular Hainanese coffee brand from Malaysia Choon Kee Coffee is holding a limited-time pop-up at Great Nanyang Heritage Cafe’s outlet at 111 Somerset. The pop-up will run from the 23 August to 2 September 2024, from 11am to 8:30pm daily!

The famed beverage brand has been around since 1995, and has since amassed a large following after several pop-ups around bazaars in KL. Choon Kee is now headed by the third-generation scion, Foo Swee Yong, who hopes to continue the legacy of the brand’s 70-year-old recipe.

Alongside Great Nanyang’s usual offerings, kopitiam aficionados can expect Choon Kee’s unique beverage selection here, served by Mr. Foo himself for the first time as part of the collaboration. There are three series of drinks that you get to try at this pop-up: Barley Series, Choon Kee Special Series, and Choon Kee Mojito Series.

The Barley Series features three barley-ified renditions of our classic kopitiam drinks: Barley Kopi Teh ($6.80+), Barley Kopi Kaw ($5.80+), and Barley Teh Superb ($5.80+).  The drinks in this series take on a slightly more refreshing note due to the addition of barley water, but you still get to taste Choon Kee’s signature robust kopi and teh here.

The Choon Kee Special Series leans more traditional, consisting of the Hainanese Tea ($5.80+) and the KTM ($6.80+), which stands for Kopi Teh Milo. If you constantly struggle to choose between coffee or tea, the Hainanese Tea is the perfect solution as it’s a combination of both drinks. We also highly recommend the gao KTM if you enjoy sweet beverages.

Lastly, the Choon Kee Mojito Series sees the light and refreshing Haikou Breeze ($6.80+), consisting of lemon, sea salt and yakult. The sour citrus notes and salty flavours here reminded me of the popular Himalayan-salt candy in drink form!

Enjoy these limited time only drinks with their Traditional Kaya & Butter Toast ($2.70+) for a satisfying breakfast, now made with Choon Kee’s kaya spread that’s prepared with duck eggs.
