When a stall only opens for a precious few hours each day, you can be more sure than not that their food is worth checking out. We previously wrote about Seng Heng Duck Noodles in Redhill, which only operates for one-and-a-half hours each morning; this time, we head to Toa Payoh for Da Ji Hainanese Chicken Rice—they’re open slightly longer, for 5.5 hours, and only in the evening!

Located in Toa Payoh Lorong 5 Food Centre, Da Ji Hainanese Chicken Rice is super popular with the dinner crowd. Their plate of chicken rice stands out from the rest of the pack because it doesn’t come with roasted or poached chicken—they’re famous for pairing their chicken rice with fried chicken wings instead.

A standard order of Famous Fried Chicken Wing Rice will set you back just $3.50, which comes with two whole chicken wings. If two wings aren’t enough for you, you can always add on extras, which are priced at $1.50 a wing.

These fried chicken wings are said to be super well-marinated with an old-school flavour, and sport a batter that’s light and crisp. They’re meant to go very well with the accompanying chilli dip that’s reportedly spicy and addictive.

For those of us who don’t like deep-fried stuff, this stall also has your regular chicken rice with roasted and poached chicken too. These come in plates of varying sizes, with prices starting from $2.50 a plate, in increments of $0.50, up to $4.50.

If you’ve only got room for one plate of chicken rice, we’ve rated 10 best chicken rice stalls in Singapore so you can check it out. Otherwise, Hoe Kee Kitchen is a Michelin-approved stall with long queues that sells their plates of ji fan for just $2.

Address: 75 Lorong 5 Toa Payoh, #01-31, Toa Payoh Lorong 5 Food Centre, Singapore 310075
Opening hours: Fri-Wed 6:30pm to 12am
Da Ji Hainanese Chicken Rice is not a halal-certified eatery
