Our team compiled a list of the oldest bakeries in Singapore, and Dona Manis Cake Shop made the cut thanks to its famous banana pies, which have been a staple since 1990. Recently, the brand opened a dine-in cafe called Dona Manis Heritage Bakehouse, offering a modern take in contrast to the quaint charm of its original outlet at Katong Shopping Centre.
It’s a must to get the Original Banana Pie ($4.50), handmade from scratch to achieve a fragrant butter crust and flaky pastry rim, packed with soft, jammy bananas and freshly grated coconut.
It’s finished with crunchy roasted almond bits that pack quite a punch.Â
For special occasions, you can spring for a whole pie at $40. Otherwise, keep it simple with the $9 or $10 set if you’re dropping by for breakfast or a quick midday snack. Each set comes with a slice of banana pie and a cup of coffee—espresso or Americano for the former, and latte or cappuccino for the latter.
FYI, the coffee is made in collaboration with PPP Coffee.
We also tried a slice of the Chocolate Banana Pie ($4.50), which tasted noticeably more chocolatey than banana-forward.
P.S. The texture is similar to a fudgy brownie, in case you were wondering how it differs from the original.
After the pies, we moved on to the Apple Crumble ($8), featuring baked green apples covered in golden crumble, perfectly spiced and sweet.
At the time of writing, the bakery also doled out Chinese New Year treats, such as Mahjong Pineapple Tiles ($35) and Auspicious Bangkit ($35). If this has piqued your interest, place your orders on the official website.Â
Dona Manis Heritage Bakehouse is a quick seven-minute walk from Marine Parade MRT Station, and is located along a stretch of eateries and cafes right across i12 Katong.Â
