From Singapura Nanyang Coffee to Great Nanyang Heritage Cafe’s new Kent Ridge outlet, 2025 has seen several Nanyang cafes pop up across Singapore. One more to check out is Dongsheng Cafe, a cosy under-HDB cafe in Ang Mo Kio. The cafe is known for their delicious and affordable Nanyang dishes—and better yet, everything here is priced below $8. Plus, they accept CDC Vouchers!

Upon entering, you’ll be greeted with Peranakan-style tiling, terracotta flooring, and wooden stools that set the scene of an old-fashioned kopitiam.

Beyond the usual toasted kaya toast, they also offer Steamed Kaya Toast with Butter ($3.50), featuring soft, fluffy white bread filled with thick slabs of cold butter and sweet-fragrant Hainanese kaya.

FYI, their toasts are also available in sets, where you get two soft-boiled eggs and a kopi o or teh o to pair with.

For something more filling, get their Rendang Chicken Nasi Lemak ($7.80), starring a large chicken drumstick slathered in a spicy and aromatic rendang sauce, served alongside fluffy blue pea coconut rice, a fried egg, ikan bilis, peanuts, fresh cucumbers, papadam, and sweet-spicy sambal.

Another popular item is the Mani Cai with Mee Hoon Kueh ($6.80), featuring hand-torn mee hoon kueh topped with minced pork, ikan bilis, mani cai, QQ fishcakes, meatballs, crispy beancurd skin, and a poached egg. FYI, you can get this dry or with soup.

While we’ve yet to try it ourselves, the dish is praised for its mee hoon kueh, which boasts a soft yet chewy texture that pairs perfectly with the creamy egg.

There’s also the local favourite Laksa ($6.80): a rich, coconutty broth loaded with fresh cockles, tofu, tau gay, hard-boiled eggs, fishcakes, springy noodles, and fried beancurd skin.

Wash everything down with one of their thick and ultra-frothy iced drinks, including the Dirty Ice Coffee or Dirty Ice Tea, each priced at $3.90.
