Famous Golden Mile Thai Supermarket Is Now Open With Sweet Potato Balls, Boat Noodles And More

Golden Mile Thai Supermarket is now open at Aperia Mall

Golden Mile Complex is one of those very Singaporean icons, popularly known as ‘Little Thailand’ for the many Thai eateries within the building. Besides heading there for legit Thai food, there’s also the Thai Supermarket, which has now reopened at their brand new digs in Aperia Mall, near Lavender MRT Station. If you’re unfamiliar with Thai Supermarket, the famous institution has been around since 1985, and is a one-stop shop for all things Thai groceries, including snacks, beverages, and cooking essentials.

The supermart has been open for several weeks now, but if you’ve not made a trip down, you really ought to soon to stock up on some of the best things to buy at the Thai Supermarket, and check out the five new eateries that are now officially open.

Fans of Yaowarat-style buns will be pleased to know that Yung Yung is one of the vendors at the new Thai Supermarket. The brand, which has another outlet in Jurong East, is known for their sweet lava-filled buns and bubble tea.

There’s a minimum purchase of two buns, and there are eight flavours to choose from: Original Kosong ($2.80), Creamy Peanut Butter ($3), Pandan Kaya ($3), Melted Chocolate ($3.50), Milky Milk ($3.50), Bis-Choco ($3.80), Dirty Ovaltine ($3.80), and Overfill Speculoos ($3.80).

You can also expect Thai banana fritters, sweet potato balls, and yam chips at Talad Thai Banana, two kiosks down from Yung Yung.

You’ll find that the Sweet Potato Balls ($5 for 12) are fried pretty often, thanks to the constant queue at the kiosk.

The Thai Fried Banana ($4 for six) is not to be missed too, with its crisp, light batter studded with crunchy bits of crushed nuts. You can get these, along with Thai Yam Chips ($4) and the sweet potato balls, as part of the Mix and Match ($8) set.

Head to Thai Yum Mee for their limited special menu of mango treats—we tried the Mango Slushie Bomb, available as part of the Mango Slushie Bomb Combo ($9.90), which comes complete with Chiang Rai Noodle ($7.90), any salad worth $6.90, and three mixed skewers.

Fans of the Thai dessert will love the Mango Slushie Bomb which is the ultimate combination of slushie, plus a whole side of cut Thai mango, and sticky glutinous rice balls.

If you’re wondering what Chiang Rai Noodle is, Thai Yum Mee describes it as a Thai-style bak chor mee, which you can opt to have with chicken or pork.

We were surprised by how well the moreish meat sauce went with the thick yellow noodles. The dash of fresh lime juice and a touch of spice made the dish even more appetising, and had us planning to come back ASAP.

For a proper sit-down meal, check out Slurp, a casual noodle bar concept by the same guys behind CBD-famous Folks Collective, which has also opened adjacent to Slurp. Look forward to legit Boat Noodles (from $10.90), Pad Thai (from $11.90), and even Pad Mama (from $11.90); prices vary according to your choice of protein. Our favourite was the Trio Pork Platter ($32), which comes with Crispy Pork Belly, Folks Pork Belly, and Moo Ping Skewers, as well as sticky rice and house-made dips.

For raw marinated seafood, head to Folks Collective to satisfy your cravings for Flower Crab ($28+), Prawn Sashimi ($20+), and curries including Yellow Coconut Curry (from $11.90+). If you’re here for lunch, they’ve also got DIY Rice Bowls with pineapple rice, Thai braised pork leg and more!

If you are looking for other Thai supermarkets around Singapore, there’s Rama Bear Thai Mart near Jalan Besar MRT Station. For tom yum addicts, check out The One Tom Yam Mee in Ang Mo Kio for DIY tom yum soup!
