Hjh Maimunah has Michelin Bib Gourmand nasi padang

Hjh Maimunah is a familiar name around town when it comes to nasi padang━the famous stall has been around since 1992, and has received Michelin Bib Gourmand recognition for six consecutive years since 2018!

Named after the founder’s mother, Mdm Hajah Maimunah, Hjh Maimunah specialise in traditional kampong-style Malay dishes, providing comfort food at an affordable price.

The sheer variety of over 40 dishes on offer at Hjh Maimunah include crowd favourites such as Beef Rendang Set ($8.50), Asam Pedas Fish Set ($8.50), Juicy Sundanese Grilled Chicken ($5), and more. Get these as part of set meals which come with rice and your choice of two sides or vegetables.

A classic option is the Beef Rendang Set ($8.50), with fork-tender beef in an aromatic thick gravy.

A vegetable dish you could consider is Terung Sambal Balado ($5/$7), or fried eggplant topped with fresh red sambal for a spicy kick. Alternatively, there’s Sayur Lodeh ($5/$7), a Javanese vegetable curry. Request to have this coconut-based curry ladled on your rice!

Alternatively, order a Begedel ($1.20) to go with your nasi padang, for seasoned mashed potato shaped into a patty and deep fried to golden brown ends.

For a meat-free option, check out their Tahu Telor Jakarta ($8) which features a tower of tofu deep fried in crispy egg, served on an appetising tangy, nutty and sweet sauce. It’s also topped with shredded cucumber and carrot for freshness, and crushed peanuts that add crunch and extra flavour.

If you’re feeling adventurous, try their Lemak Babat ($10) or Lemak Siput Sedut ($9.50). The first is beef tripe, while siput is sea snails: both are cooked in coconut-based curries.

Hjh Mainumah also serves a wide selection of familiar kueh and desserts, such as Bubur Pulut Hitam ($2.20) and Goreng Pisang (five for $3). There’s Onde-onde ($3) and Badak Berendam ($3) too, both starring pandan-flavoured glutinous rice balls.

If you love nasi padang, you’ll have heard of Che’ Rose, a 60-year-old stall that’s said to have Singapore’s best beef rendang. Otherwise, check out our list of cheap halal food if you’re on a tight budget!
