ICYMI: One brand that has dominated headlines over the past month is HOUSE+ Bubble in Jurong East, a sprawling $45 million urban bathing and wellness destination in Jurong East which spans a vast space equivalent to 7.4 Olympic-sized swimming pools.
Touted as the largest 24-hour spa in Singapore, the complex features a wide range of amenities, including gender-exclusive hot soaking pools, private spa rooms, body treatments, a cinema, an e-sports room, as well as areas offering unlimited food and drinks, among many others.
Guests can pay $89 per ticket for 12-hour access to the facilities, or $119 for 24-hour access. However, this does not include the buffet, which costs an additional $79 for lunch and dinner, and $19 for breakfast and supper. Massage and foot reflexology services are also charged separately, at $79 for a 12-hour usage period.
While the first phase of its opening drew criticism from guests who felt it fell short of the lofty standards promised, the spa has since carried out upgrading works on both its pools to deliver a much-improved experience.
That aside, we were most intrigued by their Premium Lunch and Dinner buffet selection, which features a selection of over 100 dishes with prominent Japanese and Chinese influences. This includes chilled seafood, live teppanyaki and noodle stations, classic Chinese dishes and more.
We got to try a variety of sushi, namely the unagi nigiri, gunkan-style California rolls with orange tobiko and shredded crab, and a few mango-topped rolls. Every piece tasted freshly made with premium ingredients.
Their live teppanyaki selection was what impressed us the most. We were given a buzzer as the chef fired up our order, and we returned to servings of lamb chop and black pepper steak. The steak was juicy and satisfying, and while the lamb chop was slightly less so, it still had a tender texture.
While we were really looking forward to their Chinese dishes as huge fans of the cuisine, they unfortunately fell flat. Both the Fish with Sour Cabbage and Sichuan Spicy Chicken Cubes lacked the bold, punchy flavours that typically characterised Chinese cuisine, coming across noticeably mild and ultimately forgettable.
I had high expectations for their Fujian Style Sweet Sour Lychee Pork, but it was unfortunately on the soggy side, while the Yang Zhou Fried Rice also left much to be desired.
Their stash of caviar caught our attention, though it was also fairly mild in flavour.
For a sweet ending, we tried two adorable animal-inspired paus. Biting into the elephant-shaped one revealed a molten custard filling, while the panda-shaped pau held a sweet red-bean centre. The pastry, however, was slightly chewy and not as soft as we had hoped.
Besides the above, guests can also enjoy unlimited fruit and beverages at the cold station beyond the buffet line, plus free-flow Haagen-Dazs ice cream.
Overall, we felt that many of House+ Bubble’s buffet items fell short in both texture and flavour, which may make the $79 price point feel less compelling, especially when there are other renowned buffet options at a similar range in Singapore. That said, their wellness-focused offerings may still be worth checking out, and we found their service exceptional throughout.
It’s also worth noting that the spa is far from the finished product, with a second phase slated for completion at the end of the year that will add another 50,000 sq ft to the facility. As its wellness experiences continue to grow and improve, guests can look forward to an even more enjoyable visit.
