We Tried SG’s First Pistachio Kunafa Teochew Mooncake—Is It Worth The Hype?

Hung Huat has pistachio kunafa mooncakes for a limited time

Move aside, Dubai chocolate dupes, there’s a new kid in town: pistachio kunafa mooncake. Popular homegrown bakery Hung Huat Cakes & Pastries just launched Singapore’s first pistachio kunafa Teochew mooncakes, inspired by the viral Dubai chocolate bar. ICYMI: a recent video of this mooncake flavour went viral, racking up around 1.2 million views at the time of writing!

The third-generation family bakery has shot to online fame in recent years for its innovative creations: think orh nee mochi tart, black sesame lava tart and more.

For Mid-Autumn Festival this year, fans can look forward to an all-new Pistachio Kunafa Teochew Mooncake, priced at $68 for a box of four. There’s also the option to customise a two or four-piece box by choosing from the bakery’s range of flavours.

The Pistachio Kunafa mooncake features a pale green shell that’s flaky and buttery, reminiscent of old-school Teochew yam mooncakes.

Cut into it, and you’ll be greeted with a stunning duo: a thick chunk of pistachio kunafa filling wrapped in a generous layer of dark chocolate.

The crispy kunafa shreds, paired with creamy pistachio paste, added a delightful crunch and nutty flavour, while the dark chocolate tied everything together. Surprisingly, the whole shebang wasn’t too sweet, though finishing a whole quarter of the mooncake still felt a tad indulgent.

If you want to try something new this Mid-Autumn Festival or impress your guests at a gathering, this pistachio kunafa flavour is worth a shot.

While I enjoyed the novel Dubai chocolate-inspired mooncake, I was even more impressed with the Teochew Crispy Black Sesame with Custard and Macadamia ($58 for four) flavour.

When eaten with the crispy mooncake skin, each bite was packed with flavours and textures: the rich, earthy, and slightly gritty black sesame paste was incredibly gao, perfectly complementing the sweet and creamy custard layer.

You can buy the mooncakes online or head down to the stall and place an order!
