Fun Toast’s history goes all the way back to 1941, the beginning of the popular old-school breakfast spot that used to be named Kheng Nam Hong. Like many of you, we like their Kaya Butter Toast Set ($5.90) best, comprising traditional brown bread with a slab of butter, soft-boiled eggs, and a cup of kopi. FYI, this is the most affordable kaya butter toast set you can get out of all the popular franchises in Singapore. Besides the crispy brown bread, there are plenty of toast options to choose from, including the Egg Mayo Toast ($6.10), Min Jiang Kueh Soft Bun ($6.10), and Honey Butter French Toast ($5.60).

Hailing from Indonesia is Tomoro Coffee, which opened their first outlet in Singapore at National University of Singapore in 2024. The coffee chain is known for using 100% Arabica beans for brew and yet, all regular-sized drinks here cost less than $6. When we visited during their opening, we tried the Tomoro Oat Latte (from $5.50) and Manuka Oat Latte (from $5.90), the latter being a sweeter and nuttier alternative to your regular coffee. If coffee isn’t your thing, we recommend getting the Hojicha Oat Latte (from $5.90) or Matcha Oat Latte (from $5.90) instead.

Hazukido is a bakery for viennoiserie lovers, where you can enjoy Japanese-style croissants in more than 25 flavours. Their flagship store is at Takashimaya, where we tried a selection of their sweets and savouries. For the former, we recommend the Taro & Pudding ($6.50), featuring a flaky croissant filled to the brim with sweet taro paste and house-made pudding. For something simpler, there are bestsellers, Caramel Almond & Custard ($6.80) and Hazelnut Chocolate ($7.50). The savouries are just as good, ranging from the more affordable Sea Salt Butter ($4.50) to Queen Crab Truffle Cream ($7.80) that’s packed with tender crab stick meat, fragrant truffle cream, and parmesan for a finishing touch.

If you love CHAGEE, you must check out Amps Tea, a tea bar helmed by the same team. You can look forward to five different series on the menu: Latte, Fruit Tea, Cold Brew, Fresh Brew, and Handcrafted Ice Blended. To beat the heat, we recommend the refreshing Triple Peach Season Tea ($6.20), the perfect quencher made using peach puree with a sweet-tangy balance. Their Da Hong Pao Latte ($6.40) is an equally delicious alternative, starring a creamy latte that boasts a full-bodied oolong tea flavour with a mildly sweet aftertaste. There are three toppings to choose from here, namely Cheese Top ($1.80), White Pearls ($1.20), and Osmanthus Jelly ($1.20).

As working adults, most of us only have an hour or so to enjoy lunch, which means it can be a struggle to get both coffee and a meal within the given time. You can kill two birds with one stone at Cooking Panda, though, as they offer both caffeinated drinks and mala tang. Mala tang ingredients are priced at $3.20 for 100g, with options including beef, lobster balls, beancurd skin and more. Pair this with an iced Coconut Americano ($5.50) to quell the heat, or a classic Black Coffee ($4) for your daily dose of caffeine.

For a warm, comforting bowl of soup, head to Super Ngon Vietnamese Noodle Cafe, a casual Vietnamese eatery with freshly made rice noodles. The crowd-favourite Beef Noodle Soup ($10.90) is made using beef bone broth to get that rich, robust flavour. There’s even a dry version for $11.50 if that tickles your fancy! If you don’t mind spending a tad more, get the Beef Noodle Special ($12.90) with gelatinous tendon. For those who can’t take beef, opt for the Chicken Noodle Soup ($9.90) instead.

Our team loves nasi lemak, so much so that we have a curated guide to the best nasi lemak in Singapore. Though we’ve been to a fair share of eateries specialising in this dish, not many have been around for as long as Mount Faber Nasi Lemak, which was first established in 1975. Their Chicken Wing Set ($6.80) sells like hotcakes here; you get coconut rice, deep-fried chicken wing, long beans, and the usual egg, peanut, and ikan bilis. There’s also the Drumstick Set ($7.80) if chicken wing isn’t your preferred part! We found the Lamb Curry Set ($8) an interesting alternative to your regular nasi lemak, consisting of creamy lamb curry, soft potatoes, and long beans.
