Jang San Korean Restaurant: Traditional Braised Pig Trotters In West Coast

Jang San Korean Restaurant has braised pig trotters in West Coast

Having Korean food in Singapore is no longer just about finding the best jjajangmyeon spots. Recently, more establishments specialising in lesser-known dishes have begun sprouting up—there’s Seoul Noodle Shop’s knife-cut noodles and TONSHOU restaurant’s pork cutlet. Adding to the list is Jang San Korean Restaurant, an eatery at NEWest that serves up braised pig trotters and plenty of banchan on a traditional tray.

For the uninitiated, jokbal, AKA braised pig trotters, is a widely loved dish in Korea. It’s typically enjoyed with spicy cold noodles, plenty of banchan, raw garlic, and fresh lettuce to wrap everything in a mouthful.

You get all these with the Signature Set ($77++), where a traditional metallic tray displays all kinds of banchan, a medium-sized braised pig trotter, and fresh veggies. If you’re there with a bigger group, we recommend getting the large at $99++ instead. FYI, all side dishes and sauces are refillable!

A must-have alongside jokbal is mak guksu, AKA Spicy Cold Dry Noodle ($20++). These cold buckwheat noodles are eaten dry and made using a chilled broth with lots of spicy seasoning. I recommend having each piece of meat with the noodles for the best experience.

Another popular dish in Korea that’s not as commonly found in Singapore is yukhoe, better known as Marinated Raw Beef ($25++). Think beef tartare that’s chewy and savoury, doused in sesame oil and topped with chopped radish and spring onions. There’s also the Bibimbap with Raw Beef ($18++) if you’d like rice to go with it.

For those working or living in the area, there are lunchtime exclusives between 11:30am and 2:30pm, starring Beef Soup with Rice ($9.90++), Seafood Noodle ($13++) and more. There are set meals priced at $17.50++ too!

Jang San Korean Restaurant is a 5-minute bus ride from Clementi MRT Station. Though not the most convenient, it’s a great alternative to your usual Korean fare in Singapore, so pay them a visit if you’re all about trying new food.
