Seafood in Singapore is infamously expensive. A meal for two can easily set you back a three-digit bill. Right across the Causeway, however, you only need to pay a fraction of the price. We’ve done the legwork to curate the best Johor Bahru seafood restaurants to satisfy your crab and lobster cravings without feeling the pinch. Do note that the seafood prices are seasonal, so they may be different when you visit.

1. Anjung Senibong Malay Seafood

The concept behind Anjung Senibong Malay Seafood is pretty interesting. You get to shop for your seafood like how you would at a wet market, where a wide display of fresh fish, crabs, and lobsters greets you.

The Lobster here is priced at RM230 per kg, which works out to be less than $80. Considering how fresh lobsters easily cost more than $100 in Singapore, we consider this quite a steal. If you’re visiting with a group, we recommend sharing more items, including their Salted Egg Sotong Ring (RM27), Tomyam Prawns (RM24), and Sambal Gong Gong (RM36).

2. Ah Meng Restaurant

Seafood fans would have heard of Ah Meng Restaurant, a popular, highly-rated JB restaurant that has garnered more than 1K Google reviews at the time of writing. They are best known for their seasonal crabs and prawns, which come in a variety of flavours.

There are four crab dishes to try here: Chilli, Salted Egg, Gan Xiang, and Black Pepper. Do note that prices are seasonal, so check with the staff before placing your orders. Their prawns are another must-try, with diners lauding the Salted Egg (from RM38) and Sambal Petai (from RM38) as the best options. There are also crayfish and lala here, so take your time browsing the menu to see which one tickles your fancy.

3. Hai Kee Seafood Restaurant

Hai Kee Seafood Restaurant has been on the up and up with their fresh selection of seafood; diners head down mainly for the slipper lobsters and crabs. For the uninitiated, slipper lobsters differ from regular lobsters in both appearance and flavour. They have flattened bodies without the large claws, boasting a delicately sweet meat within. They’re also often more affordable!

Here, you can choose from four different slipper lobster flavours: Butter, Chilli, Cereal, and Black Pepper. As for seasonal crabs, we recommend trying the KamHeong Chilli, which combines Malay, Indian, and Chinese flavours altogether, in one dish.. 4. Yi Jia Seafood Sdn. Bhd.

Dining at Yi Jia Seafood is a slightly fancier affair than the other restaurants on this list. However, the premium you pay here is well worth your money, according to online reviews. There are two outlets to visit, depending on which restaurant is nearer to your stay.

Their Fried Crab with Golden Egg Yolks is a safe bet if you enjoy the creamy and piquant sauce paired with the soft, tender crab meat. Though slightly thick in consistency, the sauce enhances the sweet and delicate crab. What’s also interesting is that there are eight types of fish here, with popular picks including seabass, saddle grouper, and red snapper. This isn’t all—you can choose how you want your fish to be cooked in six different ways: Hong Kong-style steamed, spicy sauce claypot, and steamed with spicy and sour sauce are some examples.

5. Todak Seafood Restaurant

Another famous restaurant on this list with over 5K Google reviews is Todak Seafood Restaurant. There’s a stretch of live seafood displays here, where you can walk around to see what you’d like before placing your order.

Prices here get as low as RM5 per 100g for fresh crabs, while it’s only RM9 per 100g for red snapper and RM10 per 100g for prawns. The best part is that there are so many variations to choose from; for crabs, there are Meat Crab (RM5 per 100g), Indonesia Crab (RM8 per 100g), and Flower Crab (RM10 per 100g). Prawn lovers can check out the Tiger Prawn (RM10 per 100g), Local Sea Prawn (RM10 per 100g), and the premium Mantis Prawn (RM16 per 100g).

6. Leva Leur Cafe

Leva Leur Café & Trading is a bit of a wild card.This isn’t your traditional Chinese seafood restaurant; instead, it’s a halal restaurant that whips up amazing seafood buckets. The restaurant itself looks cool and edgy, its black walls scribbled with chalk notes and drawings of customers.

At RM25 per 100g, you can indulge in their fresh lobster, with three options to choose from: Boston, Australian, or Live. If you’re too lazy to pick, opt for their Seafood Lambak Combo instead, where you can choose from seven variations. The most affordable of the lot is Seafood Lambak 2A (RM67), which gives you 300g of prawns, 500g of lala, mixed veggies, two servings of rice and more.

7. Tian Lai Seafood Garden

The magical thing about the Chilli Crab at Tian Lai Restaurant is how concentrated the flavours are. The glossy sauce acts as the perfect conduit for the spicy and garlicky goodness, best mopped up with some deep-fried buns. Besides chilli crab, there’s Black Pepper, priced at RM150 for XL and RM220 for XXL. You can also enjoy them with Salted Egg or Sweet and Sour sauce too, at the same price!

Fish lovers can check out their well-varied selection here, with 10 types to choose from: seabass, pomfret, golden snapper, and brown marble grouper are just some examples. Price-wise, the Teo Chew Style Golden Snapper costs RM120 while the Fried Sweet and Sour Seabass is slightly more affordable at RM80.

8. Restoran Chua Kee

Restoran Chua Kee is known for dishing up Chilli Crab (seasonal price) with a thick, viscous gravy permeating the fresh crab meat. It does have a certain sweetness and tang of the iconic SOS chilli sauce that many of us are familiar with.

There are also prawns and cuttlefish to go with your crabs here; the former let you choose from  12 flavours, including the popular Cereal (from RM25) and Salted Egg (from RM25). As for cuttlefish, you can expect five varieties from RM20 each, where Sambal and Dried Chilli are great for those who love punchy flavours.

9. Everywhere Lobster Club

The name  Everywhere Lobster Club is no misnomer: this fancy restaurant specialises in lobsters. The shellfish is served in different forms here—in a roll, on a platter, and even as a tower. Though prices are not exactly cheap, it’s not every day you find a lobster speciality restaurant in Singapore and JB, so we think it’s worth a visit if you’re in the area.

If you love the combination of cheese and lobster, you must get the Cheesy Baked Lobster (RM208++) or Lobster Mac & Cheese (RM108++). The former is served with a signature house-made lemon garlic butter sauce, Cajun butter sauce, and salad, with fries on the side. Alternatively, go big or go home with their Hot Seafood Platter (RM380++), comprising chilli-baked oysters, sautéed mussels, grilled prawns, Asturalin lobster and more.

Open till 12am every day, Johor Bahru Seafood Village is a great spot to visit when you want to feast on fresh seafood even past dinner hours. Like many seafood restaurants listed here, their crab prices are seasonal, so we encourage you to check with the staff before placing your order.

What’s interesting is that their crabs come in lesser-seen flavours such as Butter Cream and Dry Curry. It’d be remiss of you to leave without ordering their range of prawns, including Salted Pepper (from RM45), Soy Sauce (from RM45), and even Wine (from RM50).
